Orci and Kurtzman claimed that TNG: "Parallels" allows the premise of Star Trek 2009 to work. I, however, think that that is a bs explanation since "Parallels" only involves naturally occuring alternate realities. The DTI novel Watching the Clock provides an explanation for the existence of the physics of both "Parallels" and Star Trek 2009.

Well, Worf did artificially create about a dozen new alternate realities.
