Spock Doesn't Know His Own Family Tree

Maybe he "was not disposed to discuss matters of a personal nature" at that point in his relationship with Kirk. He's probably relaxed a bit by the time of "The Corbomite Maneuver," when he refers to his mother as "an Earth female" (of course, he's just compared Sarek to Balok at that point).

That's always been my favored fanwank for that little inconsistency too.

I wonder to what extent, and by what neurological mechanism, fans must be of two minds: a real world, It's-just-a-show, mind AND a within-the-fictional-canon mind?

Sorry, my bad. ;)
Reminded of the woman who came in the book store I managed back in the 80s and wanted all nine Star Wars books. The ones the movies were being based on. She left convinced I had no idea what I was talking about when I informed her they did not exist.

That's hilarious.

It's simple. Your customer was a slider who came from an alternate Earth where there were nine Star Wars movies and nine novels based on them!

Back to the o.p.: the line is technically true. His mother and father are his ancestors! Spock is also very private. Remember, Kirk and McCoy didn't even know Sarek and Amanda were Spock's parents till he told them in Journey to Babel.
