Spock and the 3 headed snake...

I recently came across pictures of one of the old AMT Star Trek models from the '70's (I think.) One of my friends had all the Star Trek models, the Enterprise, the Klingon ship, the phaser, communicator and tricorder and also the strangest one...Spock and the 3 headed snake.

I have to wonder where they got that idea from, it surely wasn't in any of TOS episodes, was it in TAS? I'm currently rewatching TAS and haven't seen it yet but I don't remember it at all. Kind of makes me wonder...what were they thinking?

I remember that model, but it doesn't seem to have been sourced from any episode. It was just a model that the manufacturers thought would look neat. Popular character in a perilous situation. I remembered seeing the Enterprise in the box art, and asking if it was in the model kit. Apparently not.

I remember I wanted to get the Exploration Kit when it was released back then.... phaser, tricorder, communicator. I had (when I was five) the shuttlecraft Galileo, and when I was 7, the Klingon battlecruiser.

It's definitely not from a TAS episode, just a sculptor's imagination. Perhaps loosely inspired by young Spock in the desert in "Yesteryear"?, where we see that the Vulcan region was rather dangerous.

IIRC, Roddenberry was upset that Spock was shown zapping a "strange, new life form" with his phaser, or at least he was responding to fan complaints that "Spock wouldn't do that". For ST:TMP, the original molds were retooled, omitting the snake and the phaser, modifying the uniform - but not the insignia, boots, trouser cuffs or communicator - to resemble Spock as he (sort of) appeared in TMP.

The recent rerelease went back to the original design.

It was just rereleased last year-ish, BTW. You might still be able to find it available.

I would have loved to see Kirk and McCoy figures, to scale, in the same setting, with bases that would then form a larger scene. McCoy treating a wounded redshirt, Kirk punching a Klingon.

When Leonard Nimoy died last year and majority agreed to make the monthly art challenge a tribute, I opted to depict the notable model kit, expanding its scope, interpreting the vaster scene presented upon the box art.

As this was composed in Poser with a collection of pre-made content, allow me to credit those who contributed.

I've seen this model box several times, and it NEVER occurred to me to think that the three-headed snake thing was actually a part of the model! I figured the model was just Spock in that pose, and everything else was just art they surrounded the model with for the box. Weird!
