Spock’s Promotion to Captain

Is Spock’s promotion to captain depicted in any of the novels (e.g., the New Earth series)? I recently rewatched the farewell scene between Picard and Riker and wondered what Kirk and Spock might have said to each other when the latter was finally promoted.

New Earth is at the latter end between 1 and 2 and so it’ll have to be a novel before that. Maybe Ex Machina?

Howard Weinstein's Deep Domain from 1987 showed Kirk deciding to give up the Enterprise again and convincing Spock to take command. It doesn't actually show the moment of Spock's promotion to captain, but establishes it as impending at the end of the book. I can't think of any other novel or story that depicts that transition directly, but my own Mere Anarchy: The Darkness Drops Again addresses it in retrospect, offering a somewhat different explanation than Deep Domain did.
