Split DVD/BD sets for Series 6 in Region 1

TV Shows on DVD is reporting that, as with the UK, Warner Home Video/2 Entertain will be splitting Series 6 into two DVD and Blu-ray releases this time around, with the first 7 episodes coming out July 19, followed by Part 2 in "early November."

Note the "Early November" part - that suggests to me September for the start of the second half, if anyone's keeping track.

A full-series set is still planned for around Christmas, which is good because according to the announcement the two smaller sets will be virtually vanilla except for a couple of Monster Files featurettes. Presumably the box set will include A Christmas Carol, video diaries etc (although according to an earlier report it might not include the Proms concert, which may be kept as an added-value exclusive for the standalone Christmas Carol release from earlier this year...

Let the complaints about double-dipping commence (though, really, they're giving us plenty of warning about the fact there's going to be a full-season box later, so it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone...

I hope Christmas Carol doesn't get added in. I already have that.

Though I'm not sure I would wait for the full set anyway. The only extras I ever get excited about are deleted/extra scenes.

Awww. I was hoping they wouldn't go in this direction. It just means my library will take extra long to get the second part in. :(

I'll be waiting for the complete season set at the end of the year. Hopefully they'll have decent commentaries this time (preferably on all the eps).

Based on the information I have at work, the Series 6 Part 1 DVD set is only supposed to be "Impossible Astronaut" through "A Good Man Goes to War." No "Christmas Carol."

23skidoo indicated it might be included in the full set at year's end.

But since I'm too impatient to wait that long, it probably won't be an issue for me :)

I'm also kinda hoping that "A Christmas Carol" won't be in the Series 6 full set, but I expect that it will based on previous releases. Honestly, the main reason I got it now instead of waiting was for the Doctor Who Prom. :D

To be honest, the x-mas specials from other years are included on the subsequent series' sets (2,3 & 4). But since this one had it's own release, you would hope not.

But then The Next Doctor and the 2009 specials were released individually and then together in one set. There's precedent both ways.

Yeah, those 2009 specials would be a bit much to add to a whole other Doctor's season set anyway, so they would be the exception.

It wouldn't bother me to have Christmas Carol added to the S6 set, as long as it wasn't an excuse to charge even more for it.

I am not bothered by it.. here in the US, they have Wal-mart for those who want to wait and do their shopping all at once and get a great value price.. then there are those who can not wait and just have to have that pizza, milk, or soda now, and so there are convenience stores which charge a little more for the ability to have it readily accessible. So to me the idea that they would release the 2 separate sets fills that niche of those who can not wait and desire the series in their possession immediately..

It serves to cover all consumer types.

All the xmas specials so far were released individually then added to the season set, so this one will be too.

^ Could that have been non-US? I never saw any of the pre-2009 specials anywhere but with the Series sets.

Yeah, I think that's an R2/R4 thing. R1 only got the vanilla releases for Series 1; everything after that was full-season sets. We did get each 2009 special individually and in a boxset at the end, but that was a special case.

The R1-Series 1 set I have looks as packed as any of the following series ("over 5 hours of special features").

I didn't explain quite fully, I guess. For Series 1, R1 got both the vanilla DVDs that R2 & R4 still get as well as the full-series set at the end of the releases. I assume that the full-series set sold far better than the individual releases, since by early 2006 R1 was accustomed to full-season sets anyways, so they never released the vanilla DVDs for the subsequent seasons; just the full-series sets.
