Then why can't we do that now with large fires that are happening right now?

That tank thing looks like it came right out of Thunderbirds
 
The problem with the tank thing - too limited in area of effect. The method most commonly used with large fires is "fire bombing":

While this helps, it's a very dangerous method (massive updraft from the hot air produced by the fire) and there never seem to be enough of the aircraft - or skilled/crazy pilots available.

There are quite a few pilots daring enough to try but, not all in the same place and the same time!

Oz could use a bunch of them right now...
 
Apparently, the word "impossible" has no equivalent in Russian...
