Fair point on Peter Pan, Chris. I hadn't thought of a fly system. That would probably be the best bet.
A microphone in the mask wouldn't be a problem at all. Depending on how it is set-up, it can sound a bit muffled. The material needed for the mask shouldn't be a problem either. I am sure that they can find something that will allow the actor to breath properly, not die in sweat, and give him full movement. I directed my students superhero play a year ago and these problems were easy to solve.
If a little school in the middle of nowhere with no money in their drama department can pull it off, I am sure a big-time Broadway musical can.
