SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Ah. I'm not a horror fan and now that I think of it I don't believe I've watched a single horror movie from the 80s (the age of the slasher, I've been told). Was it a hit or something?

Not really.

By name only.
Which I guess was good enough for them to consider a 3-D version of it.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I'm sure this has been discussed at length around here somewhere that I'm unaware of, but there seem to be a few people here who agree with the hype that Avatar was "game-changing".

Can someone describe, briefly (I know, that's asking a lot, lol!), how it changed anything? What did it do that wasn't already done in, say, the LOTR trilogy or the SW prequels? (Or maybe point me to a thread where it is discussed?)

The only real advance that impressed me in Avatar was the fact that the CGI characters' eyes looked more real than anything in the past, not the usual dead-eye look. Other than that... CGI environments, CGI characters, motion capture... all been done before.

I've never seen a CGI environment that immersive before. Even the Star Wars or LOTR movies didn't go into such detail. Like in ROTS, when they were in the Wookie's homeworld. They showed you the jungle, but you couldn't go into the jungle and spend three hours in the jungle. Imagine all of Endor in ROTJ as a CGI forest, instead of location shooting. That's what Avatar has achieved. That's what they couldn't do before, or at least not convincingly.

Plus, it was continually 3D in Avatar. You almost couldn't take your glasses off without experiencing blur. Isn't that new?

meh, i thought the 3D was distracting at times, although i did like the photorealism CGI that Cameron used. Far more advanced than any of the recent Zemeckis movies that have come out using it.

3-D. I used the dreaded term and I was referring specifically to that. Avatar may or may not be the point 3-D cinema has come 'of age', as it were, in that it's the big thing now (traditionally it's a not particularly viable gimmick).

As far as the SFX goes, the film's Na'vi are the most realistic-seeming CGI creations I've ever seen, as the motion-capture technology developed for the film has definitely set a new bar by which to judge these movies. Look at the Na'vi, and then compare them to Gollum and Jar Jar - we've come a long way, clearly.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

My opinion is that they should reboot it as a television series executed similarly to Smallville...

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

^^ They sorta did a few years back... But running fast in the suburbs is one thing, and swinging through skyscrapers is quite another. Wouldn't be feasible on a TV budget, unless they shot the actor stuff on film and switched to animation for the action. Which could be interesting, actually, but I doubt many would embrace it.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I remember the old 80's Spider-Man TV series. I think the actual webslinging was relegated to like oft-appearances, if at all. A character like Spidey deserves the big-screen treatment.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I'm a little more concerned about the "villain-fighting [taking] a back seat to the high school angst" part of that.

Let's face it. All the Spider-Man films had villain fighting take a backseat to the angst, especially the much beloved Spider-Man 2.

Well, Raimi sure as hell didn't want to do it because of Superman Returns 3D. No matter what you think about that movie, the 3D was a joke.

Really? I thought it was pretty good.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Sony has announced a release date for the Spider-Man reboot: July 3, 2012. Also, they've announced that it'll be a 3D film.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

^^ What's the problem? I'm glad that it will be. There'll probably be a 2D version too, so everybody wins.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

A Spidey movie would work fantastically well in 3D. I was surprised that Spider-Man 3 wasn't in 3D as Superman Returns, the year previous, had 20 minutes in 3D and looked fantastic. I would figure that Sony would have wanted to play with that themselves.

I dunno. I think that with today's technology, you can pull off Spider-Man in a live action show reasonably well.
