SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Studio interference is a way of life. It's the norm, not the exception.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Sony has to make this movie soon or the movie rights will revert back to Marvel (Which is now owned by Disney) won't they? Was that just the X-men movies?

If I recall correctly, you don't actually need a film itself to keep the rights from reverting, just to demonstrate that a film project is being actively developed. Which it clearly is; they're just not doing a very good job of it.

Development isn't usually enough to satisfy the terms of the rights contract. You have to actually produce a film within the specified time frame (although the film doesn't necessarily have to be released - for example, the unreleased Fantastic Four film made in the 1990s was made for rights purposes). But Sony has some room to maneuver since the time frame in most Marvel rights contracts is five years. So as long as they make Spider-Man 4 by 2012 they'll retain the rights.

^ He meant that the next nuTrek film is slated for release mid-2011, and having Spiderman 4 out of the way would mean less competition for nuTrek.

Ah...I was thinking that Trek 2 was almost definitely a 2012 release...

It is. Zoe Saldana said last week that she's been told pre-production on the next Trek movie should begin in earnest around December of this year. There's no way it's making it out by May 2011.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

My mistake, then (on both counts). I'd not heard about Trek XII (So Very Tired) being pushed back from the original intended data on Wiki, but then, for obvious reasons, haven't been following news of its development.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Why do they need Toby and Dunst back, anyway? Nobody cares about them.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

I don't think it's possible to have more than three films in a superhero franchise before meltdown. Most of the time even #3 is dicey.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

I've said it before, but I'll repeat it. When Raimi was left to his own devices to do Spider-man as he wanted, we got two great movies. In particular, Spider-man 2, the best of them, is the most Raimi-esque, with its Evil Dead-like scenes where Doc Ock's tentacles fuse with him.

The least good one is no. 3, where Avi Arad imposed a villain Sam always said he didn't want to use (Venom) and they vetoed his original choice of Vulture as the secondary villain. Laura Ziskin came up with the silly jazz club scene (much less entertaining than anything in the Fast Show ...)

You'd think it'd be a no-brainer that Raimi would thus be allowed to do Spidey 4 as he sees fit, but nope, the studio is too arrogant to learn from its mistakes. Thus we have this debacle.

Mistakes? If speaking artistically, I agree, Spider-Man 2 is the best of them by far, and one of the best superhero films ever.

However, Spider-Man 3 is the most financially successful of them all. As far as the studio is concerned, they made no mistake. As far as they're concerned, they have the upper hand. They can say; "See? You did what we told you to, and we made the most money." I guarantee that's they're argument with Raimi right now. And they'd be right. They care about dollars and cents far more than whether the online fan community thinks part 3 is a piece of shit.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Apparently Thor has now been moved to take Spidey 4's old slot. No hanging around there!

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

So, they can come up with a plot for Thor, but not for another Spider-Man movie? Gimme a break.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

that would be good if Trek XII got in it's slot why has Spiderman 4 been delayed just wondering

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Another example of studio interference -- apparently the Robocop remake is on hold too now that MGM Chairperson Mary Parent wants the movie to be filmed in 3D and Darren Aronofsky doesn't. I wonder if she wants it to be PG-13 too.

Is this the same problems that caused James Cameron to drop out of directing Spider-Man too begin with?

Was it?

In worldwide box office, yes, it was:

Spider-Man 3 - $890,871,626
Spider-Man - $821,708,551
Spider-Man 2 - $783,766,341

Number 2 did do better at the US box office though. And that frequently is the main thing studio execs go by.

Plus I think it's foolish of execs to assume that because a movie was a hit, fans will go to see a sequel and not to consider the word of mouth and reviews for it. A lot of people may have gone to see Spidey 3 because they enjoyed the first 2, but not go to see a 4th because they didn't like no. 3.

No, those problems were legal disputes over who owned the film rights. These problems are disputes over the creative direction.

As for the box office, domestic box office used to be prized more than international box office, but that hasn't been the case for some time now. With the continuing development of international box office as a major revenue source (made even more potent because of the weak dollar) worldwide box office is now where it's at.

Agreed, even though I'm a whore and I'll go see Spider-Man 4 anyway. :p

However, another example is the James Bond franchise. Die Another Day was a huge hit but it received horrible reviews so the producers went in another direction and produced Casino Royale which was a complete turnaround in quality and was favorably received by critics and fans alike.
