Sphere Builders' native time period?

And nobody really cares what's "canon" anyway.

CBS cares ;)
I think they care about what's canon and what isn't a lot less than fans do. Trek doesn't have a canon police like Star Wars, and TPTB are happy to let different tie-ins do their own thing.

Whether they care about it or not isn't really the point. The point is that they are still the authority on what's canon and what isn't, not the novel writers (which was what the OP brought up). On many occasions a novel writer has been hampered by edicts from CBS as to what subject matter is appropriate to write about. Whether it's that strict anymore, I'm not sure.

But not relevant to fans who still enjoy the novels, and may not care to see them dismissed with a handwave just because of "canon".

I'll refer you to my earlier post (emphasis mine):

^And Mr. Bennett (and any other ST novel author) would probably be the first to tell you that the novels aren't canon. That's not to say they aren't good or that you shouldn't feel that they enrich your personal feelings of what you believe. But as far as the show is concerned, they are not authoritative.
