Species Sound Schemes

Gonna try and jump-start this once, see if it sticks.

I remember being stunned, when I first watched DS9, at all the little differences between the way Starfleet and Cardassian technology sounded. Cardassian transporters powerful--quite a lot of bass kick, like they had a lot more juice coming to them than the Federation ones.

But the really telling thing, to me, was the "red alert" sound. This was before I'd ever heard anything from the Federation besides the typical earsplitting TOS/TNG siren that seemed like it had to degrade readiness more than stimulate it.

The Cardassian version was so...NOT obnoxious. I remember thinking, even though at that point I was WAY more a Borg fan than Cardassian, something like, Hey, these people have some SENSE!

Overall, I just find the Cardassian sound scheme far less obnoxious and/or silly-sounding than its Federation counterpart.

What about any others? Any other sound effects that struck you as particularly cool? Which do you think you would find most livable on a daily basis?

UGH, I hated the Red Alert from TNG- how on earth would you think during an actual problem??? DS9's isn't nearly as annoying, but neither was something from one of the TNG movies I watched yesterday... maybe Insurrection? Jem'Hadar ships seem quiet if memory serves- I'd like that- so I could think!!

They did tone the red alert klaxons down from DS9 onward. TNG's, if I recall correctly, was the same one used in TOS.

Personally, I like the TOS/TNG one. Although it was sometimes handled inconsistently, the usual pattern was that it went off for a minute or two to alert everyone to the situation, and then was silenced. So it's not like the klaxon was going off the entire time the crew was trying to deal with a problem.

Good topic, I've been watching Trek for so long the sounds effects of different species have never crossed my mind. It just was what is was,
I will have to pay attention to the effects and get back to you on this one.

On a related topic, which species had the strangest way to communicate,
In the Voy espisde "The Void" those creatures that they found when they beamed some equipment abord, they communiated by musical tones, I thought that was pretty cool...

Plus Jem'Hadar are supposedly always on high alert, so why would you need a signal to indicate a need to go to an even higher one?

And there were times when people ON the Federation starships seemed to get aggravated with the noise. I don't know how anyone could deal with that!

I believe so, as well.

I think that on DS9, the toning-down fits the fact that the Cardassians don't hear quite as well as humans and some other species. If your hearing is weaker, you sure as hell won't want something that's going to make it difficult to communicate, especially when your lives are hanging on getting it right the first time.

Who knows, though...maybe the personnel on DS9 found it improved THEIR alert performance as well, and passed on a recommendation to Starfleet?

Look forward to your opinion!

From reading the episode synopsis, I was never quite clear if that's the way Fantome's species communicated amongst themselves under normal circumstances, or if that was just something that had to be done to bridge the gap between their ways and most other species.

 Thats true! And I can see one of the younger ones just shooting the speakers... and then probably getting shot. Seriously, you'd think that all the red lights = red alert. Okay, maybe 2 or 3 tones, for the colour blind. After that... just turn it off! You're right, sometimes it did seem to bug even the bridge staff- so I wonder why no one turned it down? LOL

My favorite are the Romulan sounds in "Face of the Enemy".

Really? I should rewatch that and have a listen...

Some of those sounds are at the link I gave at the beginning of the thread, and I do have to admit, they sound pretty cool. :)
