Jamie Foxx is set to star in Spawn, the Blumhouse film that marks the directorial debut of Todd McFarlane from his scripted adaptation of his comic book creation. Foxx will play the character who started out in the comics as Al Simmons, a member of a CIA black ops team who is betrayed twice. After being set up by his cohorts to be murdered with his corpse set aflame, Newman is double crossed in Hell. He is convinced to become a Hellspawn warrior in exchange for being able to be reunited with his wife. But Spawn finds himself stuck in a demonic creature shell, and that his wife moved on and married his best friend. So this is one pissed-off antihero who attends to dispatching the scum of the city in good and evil battles that encompass Earth, Heaven and Hell.
I'm not too familiar with the character since I never read the comics or seen the movie but I did see the animated series on HBO. Jamie Foxx seems like a good choice.

I like Jaime Foxx so this has raised my curiosity a bit more than it was before.
My biggest hesitation on this is McFarlane being a first time director.

I had a Spawn phase as a kid, so it would be neat to have a good movie of him. Jamie Foxx definitely has potential, though I sincerely hope his performance is absolutely nothing like what he was doing in ASM2. I do agree McFarlane being untested is a potential issue. Then again, Leonard Nimoy was untested before TSFS and TVH, and those are still some of the best movies in the franchise. Being truly, intimately familiar with the material has obvious advantages.

Renner and Foxx and he’s looking at a 10-12M budget for a superhero movie? I suppose they can’t help but to profit in that case but it’s hard to swallow that will be enough to make something decent.

From what they've said it sounds like there will be very little actual Spawn in the movie, he's going to be more in the background while the movie focuses mainly on Renner's Twitch.
