Spartacus Gods of the Arena

AND ANYTHING LUCY LAWLESS DOES IS AWESOME !!! BUT , I DON'T THINK SHE WAS IN 300. SHE WAS IN SPIDERMAN 2. AND SEASON 0 & 1 OF SPARTACUS . THEY NEED TO BRING RENE O'CONNOR ON THE SHOW.

Quick question - should I watch this series, or Blood and Sand first? I acquired the latter but hadn't gotten around to watching it yet (becoming a daddy kinda kills my geek time, don'cha know) so I'm wondering if I should go through Gods first now. Thoughts?

Oooh I would watch Gods first. (of course it has one episode to go) but so far I think it works seamlessly as a prequel.

I actually really wish I could do that. I think it would add so much to the characters in Blood and Sand after watching Gods of the Arena.

The weakest of the two seasons in the first 5 or so episodes of Blood and Sand, so that's an additional reason I would recommend Gods of the Arena first.

I disagree... especially since the first scene of 'Gods of the Arena' is the finale scene of 'Blood and Sand'.

Really? If so I completely forgot that. If that's the case then definitely blood and sand first.

DEFINATELY, "Blood and Sand" first.

It makes the discovery of Batiatus and Lucretia's earlier lives so much more "deviously delicious".

Watching stuff in order of airdate is pretty much always the way to do it. Unless you suffer from some sort of George Lucas type of dementia.

She wasn't. She was in Xena (fantasy) and Battlestar Galactica (sci-fi).

Not to support timothy's Gaddafi-style ramblings, but Lawless did have very brief cameos in the first two Spider-man films. "Guy with eight hands--sounds hot."

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Right. All I was saying is Lucy Lawless makes me think "sci fi" or "fantasy" because of her other roles.

Solonius is a "worthy" friend for Quintus Batiatus... they are BOTH scum :barf2: and they are both hot for Lucretia! :bolian:

And, from the shallow end of the pool... Crixus looks MUCH better after a shave and a haircut!

Gannicus, Gannicus,Gannicus!!!!!!!

Can't wait for 1/2012! (The "world" better not end before season "2" wraps up!) :p

Loved this prequel - especially the way they kept us guessing on the finer plot points even though we knew where it was heading. You know something's going to happen to character [X] but you're not quite sure what or when...

Great stuff.

Can anyone curse better than Batiatus?

I thought it was good but not as good as Blood and Sand. They've gotten better at the FX but they seem to have lost a little something with the polish. Some of the stuff that worked when the FX doesn't stand up as well when the spotlight is placed on them. As one example, the bloodletting seemed darker and too deliberate compared to the bright garish red bursts and geysers. I'd have to watch it again but that was my first impression.

I think the final episode was a bit of a let down compared to the build up getting there. I didn't think the resolution matched the betrayals and plots that came before.

Still, like I said I thought it could've been better but it was not bad by any means. Gannicus' final dispatch in the arena was great. I've been waiting for the Crixus/Ashur moment, I knew they'd do the limp but I wasn't expecting to see the burn as well. We should be seeing Gannicus again.

I liked how Gannicus' freedom came at Batiatus' expense yet again. It's funny how he's such a complete and utter bastard and yet they make you empathetic (sometimes sympathetic) to his slights because you so understand how *he* feels at these times. I think they've done a good job with that and John Hannah has been brilliant.

I feel I'm being harsh though and want to watch it again. I've found sometimes, I don't know why, I'm just not in the right mood or whatever and feel differently after a second viewing.

I've been avoiding reading the actual history of Spartacus to avoid some of the "spoilers".

Well, so far the actual history of Spartacus has VERY little to do with this series.
(In all fairness, almost nothing is known about him until the slave revolt started).

As for viewing order - the final scene of the final episode of Gods is a HUGE spoiler for the last episode of Blood & Sand, so definitely watch it in airdate order.

I saw Gods of the Arena on netflix just on a whim and LOVED IT! now I knew of Blood and Sand but never saw an ep. so after Gods of the Arena I netflix Blood and Sand and LOVED THAT TOO! funny thing is I was going to get rid of the StarZ channel but not now

Sounds like you don't need Starz. ;)
