"Spacesuits" in the Tholian Web

If you read TAS into canon, one could also say the force-field belt was a failed experiment, becuse it never showed up again.

Called "subspace isolation fields" in TNG's "Timescape", a similar force field was projected from modified emergency transporter armbands.

Then again, the transporter was a cheap cop-out for replacing shuttlecraft or landing sequences. And I'd be perfectly happy to accept those "life support forcefields" as part of the live-action Trek universe, just as I'm happy with the transporters, quite regardless of their cop-out nature.

I always assumed the transporters were yet another cool idea stolen from Forbidden Planet. It's a totally cool concept in and of itself, regardless of cost savings - actually, I dunno that many $$ were saved, as you had the effect to add for every transporter shimmer in post production, plus you had all those additional opportunities for plot devices due to transporter malfunctions, (not to mention Bone's bickering).

We had to have transporters. 'Nuff said.
