Space Battleship Yamato 2202

I know there are references to the events of the original set of Yamato films and series in the new Harlock manga. Specifically the Earth government believes Earth has providence on its side and chooses to ignore the Mazone threat. They specifically mention all the alien forces that have tried over the centuries, starting with Gamilas and running through the various empires the Yamato fought of, plus those defeated much later by Harlock in various continuties.

Neo-Gamilas is still around and seems to be a potential worry for the Mazone as they plot to take Earth. Dessler may still be around in this timeline, even though it has been around eight centuries since Yamato first set off for Iscandar.

Do you know if future installments will reboot the other classic stories, like Bolar Wars, Be Forever, Final, and so on? Although I guess the whole premise of New Voyage was shot to hell by 2199 with the elder Kodai.

Fixed the Dreadnaught pic. I think I captured all the intended changes. I used “Yamanami Fleet”, since it is a known name in the show. If additional information comes along to the contrary, while will adjust accordingly.

Also adjusted the wave motion gun plug (or whatever that blue thing is) on the Musashi to use the correct symbol ... it was still using the original Ginga logo. Who is that Makoto Kobayashi guy? An artist for the show or something? He’s talented as hell...

Working on colorizing the main Murasame orthos next to make them match the others. I’m liking how it’s looking so far, then I’ll start working on the pair of Aquarius twins. There are subtle differences between them, but in general, they’re Andromeda bodies with Musashi/Ginga bridge superstructures. I already have the components to build them from other images, so they shouldn’t be too onerous.

I’m going to hold off on the Amaterasu for now, pending some additional information with multiple views, either orthos or models. That monster is quite different from anything that’s come before.

Makoto Kobayashi is the art director for Yamato 2202. He's been working in various Yamato projects since the 1990s when he did some model work for Yamato 2520. He's seemed to take a liking to the Syd Mead ship styling as there are clear lines of progression/regression from the Yamato 2520 ships, to the Yamato Resurrection ships, to some of the Yamato 2202 Earth ships (Ginga, Aquarius, and the Apollo Norm). Ginga is based (clearly) on the Musashi he did for Yamato Resurrection. There is also a clear path from the Yamato Resurrection fighter, the Cosmo Pulsar, back to the Koybayashi designed Cosmo Tiger I prototype (flown by Yamamoto in the series), mixed with some traits for the Cosmo Tiger II (normal design) of Yamato 2202. The original design for the Cosmo Tiger I (called the Comso One) was a kitbash of existing parts from the Cosmo Zero kit and other pieces. The Cosmo Tiger I, has longer wings than the original model and looks slightly less kitbashed in CG.

He's probably a model maker first and an artist second. This is based on the rather kitbash style a lot of his ship designs actually have in them. Bandai must love it since they don't have to produce quite as many new parts to get a dozen ships out of two new designs and some existing ones.

Oh and if you have a copy of the first episode of Yamato 2202, take a looks at various Earth ship names for the Murasame and Kongo class ships. There is a Kirk in there, along with many others.

Anyone have any experience with the Star Blazers 2199 discs that released in November last year? I ordered Part Two from Amazon, and pre-ordered 2202 Part One which comes out in late-March.

I got the special edition of part one and regular part 2. I haven’t gotten through all of them but so far the quality is excellent, as far as I can tell.

Huh... that one scene at the end looks suspiciously like the ending of “Saraba Yamato”. And not in a good way. If they want to do more after this, they should probably be careful how this goes.

Yep, looks like Yuki Mori dies (again)...thus, It's DEFINITELY classic "Space Battleship Yamato" ;)

I've now seen through SBY2202 ep. 22. I gotta say, while I was groaning a bit a some stuff they did near the start of it with Zodar; at this point I have to say 2202 is still my favorite SBY story (like the original version was for me back in 1980); and I like what they've done with the motivations behind both Zodar and Dessler at this point in the story. Neither are 'evil just because' - they're both definitely twisted by events they experienced (Dessler especially); but the motivations of both characters make sense and IDK, I feel a bit sorry for both at this point in the story.

We know they want to do more Yamato stories. So I imagine their is a twist ending (somehow) that merges the film and series endings to allow for more to be produced.

That or we get a new ship and some of the crew to continue on....but that's unlikely, given the main characters and all that.

Anyone have the skinny on when all or part of this will be available for purchase on Amazon, like SBY 2199?

My 2199 Part Two set just arrived. Nice, basic packaging. Though the DVD's are redundant.

Got to watch a couple of episodes this afternoon. The picture and sound quality is great. The voices for the English dub are pretty good. The only one that threw me was Captain Okita. I was use to the gravelly voice they gave him in the original Star Blazers.

Yeah, that was a gentleman named Gordon Ramsey (who passes around 1995) who had once been the local Bozo the Clown in New York around 1969.

For the Aquarius, I think he modifed the dome with a little more armor than what's on the Ginga. Tim Eldred I believe published a Yamato 2202 Repoirt today on his OurStarBlazers/CosmoDNA site that should have a translation (and better scans) of the extra booklet that came with the 1/1000th scale Andromeda DX kit, which has all the new Andromeda designs and names as of the end of Chapter Six.

AH! I originally thought that as well. I recently discovered that's the main-line Aquarius (AAA-08) that has the extra dome armor. The Laboratory Aquarius (AAA-07 - I'm assuming prototype) has the original Ginga dome. Someone's built some models of both of them, side by side, a photo I recently discovered that pretty effectively shows the differences between the two:

The production Aquarius also has some extra detailing around the hull, some extra stabilizer fins at the top of the bridge and some hard-mount points for a pair of tiny ships in Mars Defense Line livery (they look like unmanned destroyers from the classic Yamato New Journey) to dock on either side of the main hull. The Lab Aquarius that I'm working on now is based on the first model at the back of the picture. The regular Aquarius will be a little more challenging. I haven't figured out how I'm going to include the unmanned destroyers yet.

Here are some other shots of the main Aquarius with the extra details:

Everything AAA-07 and above (what's the AAA-06, I wonder? I have found literally nothing about it!) are apparently considered "AAAAS" ships, or "AAA (Andromeda original nomenclature) Advanced Stage".

Eventually, I'll get to this monster, the Amaterasu (named after Sasha's ship that crash-landed on Mars containing information about Iscandar and the Cosmo DNA - not sure of the "AAA" registry, which has a LOT of major differences from the original Andromeda line:

And this weird little thing, the L'Andreomède (AAA-009) / Vem Heidern (AAA-010) / Dels Gardola (AAA-011) which, judging by the livery and hull structure, seems to be another one of those EDF/Gamilas hybrid ships, deviating even more from the core Andromeda line:

I tell ya, it's been a real slice of P.I.T.A. bread trying to track down information on all these variants. So many versions, and so little info in English. I'm going to try to find that article you mentioned on CosmoDNA. I may have already seen it just not dug too deeply into the translated text - which I probably should have done in retrospect.
