Wonder if it means there will be a DVD/Blu Ray release? Also I hope they got Ark of the Stars and 2202 as part of the deal.
If it lines Funimation's pockets....they will go for it. Mind you the original run of Star Blazers was both first and second series together as a package deal, with the second season being finish while they started work on dubbing the first series. This is why there are more bits of clever editing in the first series and not as many in the second series when it comes to editing out violence, death, and direct Japanese text.
Hopefully it will remain uncut and not declawed for western audiences. I'm weary of having other people decide for me what's okay to watch or not.
Plus I don't recall much censoring of anime in dubs these days, they've actually gotten better at not screwing things up with dubs these days.
Plus I've heard a throy banded about that the subbed version might show up on Crunchyroll.
Wasn't there supposed to be one less episode in the Voyager version of 2199? That sounds like editing to me.
No. What the North American version was suppose to do was have four episodes per disc on the first five discs and then six episodes on the sixth disc. Instead of the Japanese release which has two episodes on the first disc and then four episodes on the remaining six discs. The Japanese release having one more disc than the North American release as well as being off by two episodes when getting the rest of Yamato 2199 due to the stopped sales three years ago.

Well the first episode of the dub is streaming on Funimation's and the VRV thing. So far looks like they are using the Japanese names and I didn't see anything cut.

From what I understand they did use some Star Blazers era conventions for the translation...not names, but using megameters instead of "space kilometers". And Planet Bombs, instead of Meteoric Bombs. Those seem fine to me. Megameter is a real metric messurement anyway that could be used more as things get farther and farther away for combat distances. Saying "The enemy is 50,000 (space) kilometers away and closing" might mean something, but so does "The enemy is 50 megameters away and closing". Both mean the same thing. One sounds more spacy than the other.

Crap! I need to subscribe to see them? Ugh... I think I'm going to err on the side of budget this week. Do the voices sound good at least, or do they sound like mismatched martial arts films from the 60s? Do they plan on releasing Blu-Ray's?
Hopefully they will be released on iTunes so I can check them out.

Yes it is. First episode of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 English dub came out on Wednesday. There might be the Japanese version as well, but I don't know that for sure.
It is coming out weekly.
Funimation typically releases in combo packs or DVD-only if they don't think it'll sell that great. Funimation is only listed for streaming rights though, so they won't handle a physical release, Voyager is still the license holder for the show until ANN changes their info.
Note to Funimation, keeping the alien characters speaking an alien language doesn't work so well if you still keep the subtitles in Japanese.
