Space Battleship Yamato 2202

This is slightly off-topic, but I'm making my way through the Dub of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 right now, and am hoping to get through the first six episodes of SBSY 2202 before Funimation releases the Dub for Episode 7 next Wednesday.

They'll get to the mecha....not a lot of it, but a little (there are no tanks in the Yamato 2202 series, just ships, fighters, and small mecha...probably no more that 20 feet tall I think.)

Despite being a big mecha fan, it's sort of refreshing to encounter some Japanese sci-fi space epics that doesn't have it, since it's sort of rare.

I just finished Episode 11 of SB S1, "A World I Once Saw", and, although the motivations are different, the way in which the Earth-Gamilas conflict started was very reminiscent of Babylon 5 and the incident that started the Earth-Minbari War.

So this is interesting - the ship everyone thought was the new Musashi is actually called the Ginga, or specifically, the "Experimental Ship of Transcendental Dimension GINGA". Japanese "translated" names sound very funny to me sometimes. "All your base" and all that! New Bandai kit has been listed on HobbyLink Japan. They definitely seem to be continuing the trend of adding in elements from some of Syd Mead's 2520 concepts. Not sure I like them all - some of them seem quite linear, blocky and uninspired IMO, but this particular one works for me.

In other news, there appears to be a new 1/350 Y2202 Yamato kit, following along a similar Eaglemoss-like business model of buying into a subscription to get a limited set of parts every month for a limited duration to build a complete model, much like the Back to the Future DeLorean. Found a picture of the WMG front-end module on Pinterest that has definitely gotten my attention. Of course, I can't find the pin again right now - will upload when I see it again when I have a little more time. It definitely looks more accurate than Bandai's 1/350 kit from many years back, which I still haven't gotten around to building yet. Probably based on the original CG mesh they used for the show.

If it's successful, they may even try for a 1/350 Andromeda. My wallet (and my wife) are gonna hate me!

Update: So I finally found a reference to the new 1/350 Yamato on Twitter. Was quite hard to find as there doesn't appear to be much info on it out there. Interestingly, it's not by Bandai, but by Hachette Collections Japan. I thought Bandai owned all things Yamato but apparently not any more. The 950mm length particularly makes my mouth water. :D

It once again makes me wish I was fluent in Japanese...

From what I understand it take a year or so to get all the parts to build it via magazine subscription. But I think you can get it via Amazon.co.jp

What I find particularly interesting about this picture, is the tiny little image of the Andromeda on the lower left-hand corner of the 1/350 Yamato box. Regardless of the potential size of the final product, this may be an indication of a cross-marketing effort to release a 1/350 of that as well. Need a better picture to find out if that is, in fact, what that means.

Is it just my imagination or is the quality of season 2 really bad.

Not being a Japanese animation fan and it not being available by iTunes or Netflix, I'll admit I've only seen clips of season 1 and 2, but everything looks so low budget. The early episodes seem to be of decent quality (though it's hard to tell), but the clips I've seen of later on look to be real bad. There seems to be no attempt to make the ships look like part of the animation and the characters are terribly animated and seem to go off model quite regularly (the art itself sometimes appears rather amateurish).

Again, it's hard to truly judge just from clips.

The second season can be found on Funimation. They will be airing one new episode a week until they reach episode 18 sometime in September, than they will take a break in that cliffhanger as they would have anymore material to translate until at least November. I think they are currently up to Episode 8 with the English dubbing.

Be the perfect time to dub the 2199 films.

Correction: Funimation has dubbed the first 9 episodes of Yamato 2202.

Speaking of Yamato, I'm almost finished with Season 1, and continue to really enjoy the series. I'm also excited to binge Season 2 and then start watching weekly on either Wednesdays (the day new episodes are released) or Thursday.

I notices that Star Blazers 2199 is now available on iTunes. Looks like they have two versions. English dubbed and original Japanese visions.

Funimation will effectively be forced to take a break after they release SBY:2202 Episode 18 (at the current pace that will be after 9/5/18) because the 6th Chapter of SY:2202 isn't scheduled to be released in Japan until 11/2/18 and the release date for the final Chapter 7 in Japan hasn't been released publicly as yet (at least I couldn't find a source that lists in on the official Japanese site or via Google but I wouldn't expect it to be released in Japan until February or March 2019.)

Given how Funimation has worked in the past, I'm sure they'll be subbing and dubbing the last two chapters at the same time the Japanese are; but I doubt they'd be allowed to release anything prior to the release dates in Japan.

The first half of Yamato 2199 is out on disc and is out in stores like Best Buy. A box set for episodes 1-13. In both English and Japanese.
