Source Material for Star Trek Database/ PADD app

Does anyone know what the sources are for the reference material in the Star Trek Database on Startrek.com and the the PADD app?

Are these just recreations of information from the Star Trek Encyclopedia, are the articles original or are they sourced from somewhere else?
