Soundtrack & Score Discussion

More imaginative; while every composer has certain tendencies, one could lose count trying to list all of the flat-out brilliant, memorable TV and film scores Goldsmith composed. Easily in my top 3 greatest composers list, usually standing in the top spot.
And how many Oscar winds does he get? One....in a year the Oscars decided to go satanic.

Is Bernard Herrmann in your top three?

Oh, I could wax lyrical on ths subject for ages. Music is a hugely important aspect of a film, for me. Favourite composers range from the obvious - Williams, Goldsmith, Horner, Barry - to old-school masters like North, Rozsa and Jarre, to arguably lesser knowns like James Newton Howard, Mark Mancina, John Powell and Howard Shore.

Mancina's Twister score is a personal fave, often spin the CD. Shore's work for the LOTR trilogy is amazing. Elmer Bernstein's Ghostbusters cues are pure spine-tingling nostalgia. The score that stays with me more than any other, though, is arguably Philip Glass' sublime work for Candyman, elevating an already superb film to a whole other level.

Were I to select a top five with no repeat composers, I'd probably vote for WEST SIDE STORY, Herrmann's original PSYCHO, Goldsmith's PLANET OF THE APES, Bernstein's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, plus Williams all-out finest hour: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (also in my view the best lyric-free symphonic).
