soundtrack for Trek XII - Michael Giacchino

Since Michael Giacchino is returning to score Trek XII will he use the Alexander Courage theme again (only in the end credits) or only riff on his own 2009 themes? It would be nice to hear him have a little riff of the TNG theme if only once especially with the anniversary of the TNG season 1 and the Blu-ray remastering project hitting season 2 or 3 by 2013.
It will be 2 more years before we hear the Trek XII music anyway. I figure though he will start working on it now for music themes and such since it is a sequel.
He's been pretty busy since 2009's film for feature film scores in the sci-fi genre: Land of the Lost

Through TrekMovie.com I asked MG if he would be open to using a taste of some classic Trek themes (like the Amok Time fight music or other cues) and his reply that he would consider it based on the needs of the score. So I hope we get a nod to some of the classic music cues from TOS in this one!

I'm glad to see he's returning to score the film, the soundtrack of nuTrek 1 was one of its few highlights. I'm less interested in the return of classic themes than i am about whether the main nuTrek theme will return - will it be the new equivalent of the TMP/TNG march featuring in each nuTrek movie?

He did a slightly different version of the Mission: Impossible theme for ghost Protocol than the one he did for M:I 3 so I expect he'll do a different variation of the Courage TOS theme again.

His overreliance on the "main theme" played at nearly the same tempo every time makes his scoring repetitive, and the melody was not particularly interesting or inspiring.

I thoroughly enjoyed the score of the last film and am very much looking forward to seeing what he does this time around. His work on Lost was one of my favorite things about the series. Call me a sap, but he just has a way of rousing my emotions with his music. The sense of strength and speed his score attributed to the Old Girl (nuGirl?) as she rose out of the atmosphere of Titan or spirited the crew away from the singularity was simply exhilarating, IMO.

Absolutely, I listen to the soundtrack often. I loved it in the theater and I still love it.. simple and evocative.

Perhaps because he feels the score is limited, and by extension, repetitive - the application of certain themes is inappropriate thematically to a particular scene? Just a possible interpretation of his comments.

The opening score with the title after the Kelvin scene really moved me. Whatever might have been "inappropriate" about the scoring in other places, that was appropriate in every sense of the word (to me). Perfect, even.

I wouldn't use the term "inappropriate" personally, but I did find the music somewhat repetitive (I tend to have the main theme stuck in my head in an unpleasant way)and, frankly, uninspired. I did enjoy the end credits riff on the TOS music and I very much liked MG's music for Lost, but I'm not sure whether his musical style is, for me, compatible with Trek.

That said, much like everything else about the first ten minutes of the film, no complaints about the music there.

I wouldn't categorize the other films's scores as "subdued".

It was brassy, monotonous and repetitive. The composer has one significant theme (the main one) and he shoehorns it in time after time after time.

I got sick of hearing the same "TAAA-DA-DA-DA-DAAAA" over every significant scene.

Get a REAL composer in who knows how to write more than one theme. A Goldsmith type would be great, or even a Horner would be a vast improvement. Someone who knows how to write more than one significant piece of music and tailor it to the mood of the moement.
