Sophia Myles returning to DW?

Bleeding Cool has posted some conjecture that Sophia Myles is returning to Doctor Who.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/03...will-sophia-myles-be-returning-to-doctor-who/

The supposed evidence...

  • Doctor Who is currently filming in spain. Sophia Myles was complaining on Twitter over the weekend about her luggage as she is also in Spain.
  • She was recently interviewed by Doctor Who Magazine star interviewer Benjamin Cook with no mention of when or in what context this interview will appear. The staff of Doctor Who Magazine do appear to know who the next companion will be but are keeping shtum.
  • Steven Moffat has been tweeting quite a lot to Sophia recently and heavily recommending that his followers follow her as well. They’ve been seeming quite pally of late.
  • Myles is scheduled to appear at the Doctor Who convention later this month. This would be the perfect time to announce her return to the show.

I'm skeptical, what say you?

She's been rumored since January

Just when I'm convinced that Sophia Myles isn't returning to Doctor Who, Moffat calls her "Pompy."

Is Sophia Myles coming back?

Moffat

Right EVERYBODY who follows me, go and follow @SophiaMyles - spin that fireplace. NOW. I'll explain later. Or not.
Sophia Myles tweeted back:

"Watch this (fire)place," and "The plot thickens..."
Is Madame De Pompedour coming back?

  • "Doctor Who is currently filming in spain. Sophia Myles was complaining on Twitter over the weekend about her luggage as she is also in Spain."
She is on holiday in Spain nowhere near where they're shooting. (And they finish tomorrow.) In fact, she's closer to the shooting when they're in Cardiff and she's in London!

Not true. The interview is to tie-in with the Time Team article on 'The Girl In the Fireplace' since she was never interviewed by them at the time of its original transmission.

They're friends from long before she ever appeared in Doctor Who. Friends Tweet each other.

No she isn't. You can find the official list of guest here and she's not one of them:

Yeah it's all pretty thin. That's not to say I'd be surprised if she did turn out to be the next companion, but I wouldn't be betting the farm on it.

The possibility of Sophia returning to the show is not out of the question, and there's nothing saying she has to play Reinette if she comes back. But I agree she's not involved in the Spain episode because the cast for that has already been announced through DWM and other sources - it's the one with Ben Browder, so if Myles (who is well known beyond DW for stuff like the Underworld movies and Moonlight) was involved, we'd have heard.

I've also heard speculation that the back and forth with Sophia and Moffat is in relation to Sherlock, not Doctor Who. It gets forgotten occasionally that he's basically doing two TV shows at once. I'd actually look for her to appear on that show before coming back to DW, if only because she made such an impact as Reinette that it would be hard for her to be brought in as another character. Unless they do to her what they did to David Walliams last year, and Karen Gillan in her first Doctor Who appearance and put her under heavy make-up, I suppose.

Given Lalla, Colin, Eve and Freema all had parts in Who before becoming series regulars I don't see any problem at all with her just coming back as someone else.

if Myles (who is well known beyond DW for stuff like the Underworld movies and Moonlight)
I'd say that for UK audiences she would be better known for her year on MI-5. Five years later, there might be a few people still pining for Underworld, and only the hardest of the hard-core Myles fans remember her thirty seconds in the first Underworld movie. :)

Myles, much as it pains me to say this, especially because I have the Madame de Pompadour Micro-Universe figure on my desk, is an actress that people would say, "Oh, yeah, her. I've seen her in that thing."

No, he's doing two TV shows. In no way, shape, or form is he doing them "at once." Moffat seems to be wholly incapable of managing the production feat of running two series simultaneously.

Hence no new series of DW starting in a few weeks...

Of course if he did run both simultaneously he'd no doubt be slagged off for not giving each show the attention it deserved...

Running a show isn't just getting the actors on set and filming the episodes. It's planning your season/series, commisioning scripts, writing your own scripts, reviewing other scripts and editing them or asking for changes, getting actors, etc all before you even go in front of the camera, and doing the edits and everything required after filming is done, before it's ready to air. If he did contact Sophia Myles for appearing in Sherlock, not for Doctor Who, that is a clear indication he is indeed running both shows at the same time.

Sherlock isn't filming for ten months. If the past is any guide as to Moffat's writing methods, he won't even write his first Sherlock script for at least six. Contracting an actress when there's nothing simply isn't done.

Nope, in the UK, she's better known for Spooks, which is what it was called there. :p
For some reason, I thought it was the other way round -- Spooks in the US, MI-5 in the UK. :)

Nah. I think there was some concern that in the US the name Spooks would be seen to be racially insensitive (think of Philip Roth's The Human Stain). The name Spook means a ghost or a spy in the UK, it doesn't have any racial connotations.

she's probably better known for being Lady Penelope in the crappy Thunderbirds flick than Underworld or Moonlight
We could spend hours arguing over which little-seen work people might possibly remember her from. "Hallam Foe!" "No, no one saw that. What about that appalling Dracula with Marc Warren and that guy from Downton Abbey?" "Oh, god, that was shite. Art School Confidential?" "Well, I've heard she gets her top off in that, but I've never seen it. Outlander?" "It sat on the shelf for two years, no one saw that. Tristan and Isolde?" "Well, okay, she was pretty good in that, but no one saw that, either." Point is, Myles has done a lot of work, and a lot of it's even great, but none of it's particularly memorable. :)

(I won't tell you how many of these I have in my DVD collection...)

Yea we use Spook for Ghost or Spy as well, but, yea, it's also used as a racist remark.

I don't think anyone is better known for the Tunderbirds remake. Most anyone involved has tried to bury that fact and have openly denied any involvement.

Or rather, they should. Much like how I deny ever seeing it.
