Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

Damn, that's very unfortunate. That was the one movie out of all of Sony's half-baked Marvel movie ideas that I was actually looking forward to.

Yeah, it felt like it had the right mix of distance from Spider-Man and reason to care about the characters. Venom is too tied in and Morbius just sucks. The only concern I had for this story were all the rumored villains it might eat up so they couldn't be in a Spider-Man movie

The follow-up reports I've been seeing on this news suggests that the film isn't cancelled outright, but only taken off the schedule for the time being so they can make sure the script is ready before rescheduling it. I sure hope that's the case.

Taking bets now on which happens first; Silver and Black or Gambit.

Also, I just have to say that Black and Silver sounds better to me than Silver and Black. They should change it purely to fit my own tastes. ;)

When it was revealed that the script was being rewritten from scratch, it was pretty inevitable that the film's planned release would be postponed, if not cancelled outright.

Of course, in a culture in which even the most common film practices are now viewed as suspicious and negative, it was also inevitable that we'd get people maligning Sony for not shoehorning a still-in-massive-development project like Silver and Black into a preset release date "just because"

Why can't it be called "Salt and Pepper" with a cameo by Professor X?

The problem with Batroc wasn't that they changed his appearance, it's that they changed his entire personality. They kept the savate fighting style but nothing else. They took a fun anti-villain who fights for the thrill and adventure and doesn't kill and turned him into a murderous mercenary.
The issue here is who they cast as Batroc, Georges St. Pierre. While a fantastic martial artist, his acting ability is just short of a wooden board.

His accent is very inconsistent but it was perfectly understandable to me.

Tom Hardy probably went to the same infrequent-dialect coach that Margot Robbie did for Suicide Squad. :p

I would've agreed with you before yesterday, but yesterday I finally saw Thor: Ragnarok. That one crossed the line and made things too silly -- and worse, it failed to give any real emotional weight or impact to the things that were supposed to be serious, something that other comedy-oriented Marvel films have still managed to do. It just seemed to put a token effort into the serious things because it was more interested in getting on to the next goofy bit.

Agreed. It's basically the superhero equivalent of What We Do in the Shadows. That bothers me less upon subsequent re-watchings. Mostly because, even given the sheer number of jokes, a very high percentage of them land for me. (As opposed to the Deadpool movies, where the batting average is a lot lower.)

Random movie trivia: Throughout its development, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid was originally titled The Sundance Kid & Butch Cassidy. They only changed the title because Paul Newman was the bigger star at the time and they wanted to give him top billing. Maybe a similar thing will happen with Silver & Black once it's cast.

Shame to hear about them delaying this movie. It sounds like a much better idea than Venom or stand-alone movies about Kraven or Morbius. And what about that other one, Nightwatch or whatever he's called? (The guy that got his super-suit off the dead body of his future self.)

I love the animation style and I'm liking the way they handled Miles. The changes to his dad were effective too. I didn't really like the voice of Peter, though.

This looks like a lot of fun. I wasn't sure about the art style at first, but by the time I finished watching the trailer a second time (to show my mom, who also enjoys these kinds of movies) it had really grown on me. It looks like the kind of art style I could easily see in a Spidey comic.

I gather it's influenced in part by the art style of Sara Pichelli, the artist on the original Ultimate Spider-Man comics that introduced Miles Morales.

Agreed. Planning is already underway for Tom Holland's next Spider-man movie.

Dr Strange and Marvel's spider-man are still fresh franchises.
And you can't forget Black Panther, which is STILL leading Avenger Infinity War (for now - Domestic)

Speaking as someone who hasn't read any of the Miles books, the film looks like it could be a lot of fun. I'm not terribly keen on making Peter look as dopey as appears in the trailer but I'm willing to trust the film to see how it plays out. Aside from Contest of Champions, I'm completely unfamiliar with Spider-Gwen so I cautiously curious about her inclusion. Whatever is going on with what looks like Green Goblin is the most questionable thing for me right now.

Considering the rate of decay Infinity War is experiencing (much more than Black Panther), I expect Black Panther to win out on the domestic front.

In the spiderverse there are many, many versions of Parker/Spider - it's not the MCU Spiderman. If you read the comic, Spiderman And His Amazing Friends and even Japanese TV Spiderman with his giant robot turn up.

Comic Miles is from an alternate reality to the Peter Parker we all know in the regular comic run and comes to our reality. Eventually permanently.

and 'his' Peter Parker died.
