Sony Demonstrate PS3 Firmware 2.40 Features

I dont like the upgrade much so far, without it shuting the system down was just a few clicks away, now just shutting the thing down is either a search through icon after icon, or just giving up and walking over to the manual switch.

I dont know why they couldnt have just added the option to go to the XMB at the bottom of the options the PS key used to give you.

went to upgrade and there is no update, seems its been pulled as its bricked some machines according to people on some forums

We're receiving reports that PS3s are no longer updating to firmware 2.40. Consoles currently running 2.36 are stating that there are no available updates when a system update is attempted. It seems that downloading the firmware from the official sites is also impossible. Firefox 404s out on the Japanese, European and Japanese sites. Has the latest firmware been pulled from the net? If so, why? If you're having issues with grabbing the latest update be sure to let us know.

Weird. It hung on an update screen when I walked away, so I just assumed that it finished automatically. I guess it got yanked before it could download it.

I didn't get the update, it was already down when I logged on last night, so I guess I should consider myself fortunate. I was talking to my co-worker about this, he got his update and so far he hasn't had any problems.

It always amazes that one person will have no problems with a firmware update the next guy will have a bricked system. I think is what comes from having so many different incarnations of the PS3. One will play the PS2 games, the other will not. Then you have one that plays PS2 through software and another one that uses hardware. It's no wonder Sony can't keep up with all this.

And I also have to wonder if a lot of the problems for both Microsoft and Sony is the manufacturing process. They buy all this cheap ass shit from various places and then wonder why it breaks down.

Morons.

(Can you tell I'm a little hacked about this, this morning?)

^Hey, this isn't the first "next-gen" console to be bricked by a software update.

I did get the update and it has worked. There is a fix for those people who had the problem where it only boots as far as the wavy lines and then refuses to go any further. It's tricky, but it does work.

You have to remove the hard disk. Start the PS3 and if it complains that the hard disk is missing you're good to go.

Connect the drive to a PC somehow. It's a 2.5" SATA drive so it's a matter of connecting it internally or via a USB caddy. Format it via the PC with a single FAT32 partition, and then put it back. The PS3 will then reformat the drive again and it should work after that.

Tapping the PS button will get the ingame XMB ,keep it pressed will get the old shutdown menu...

People have been suggesting that you format it on another PS3 if you have one... also, firmware updates have always been traditionally dangerous. In the PC world, it's one of those "don't do it unless you need to things"... yet, somehow, it's common place with home consoles of all things.

Anyhoo, is the firmware fixed?

Well it's not just consoles. My HD-DVD player had to be updated before it would play. My new Samsung TV can be updated through firmware. When I registered my digital camera with Canon they made mention of possible firmware updates.

In other words, it's all over the place. I was lamenting to my co-worker the other day about "the good old days" when stuff worked out of the box and didn't need updates. The price for progress I guess.

Firmware updates are great if they actually include useful new functionality (like AVI support on the 360 and PS3). It's the useless ones like most of the PSP .01 updates trying to stay one step ahead of the homebrew/CFW community that suck.

Or the ones that brick your PS3. Those firmware updates aren't so hot either.

You know I've always been a fan of console gaming over PC gaming becasue with a PC, it was always a bit of a crapshoot as to whether or not your PC was configured to run the latest game. Not so with the consoles. If it was a PS game, a N64 game, or whatever, and assuming the disc/cartridge wasn't damaged, you put it in the console and it ran.

That doesn't seem to be the case any more. With the GTA4 problems and this latest firmware update fiasco, and all the long install times for games, hell console gaming is getting to be a crap shoot too.

I'm curious to see how widespread the 2.40 bricking problem is. Are we talking 360 RROD-like numbers or less than 1% of PS3 owners? You have to remember that sometimes a tiny minority can be very loud, particularly when something they paid up to $600 for is a doorstop now.

Regardless, Sony should definitely offer free repairs and compensation to people whose system was bricked.

Well it was enough for Sony to pull the update. At least they didn't do the Microsoft Bagdad Bob routine "There is no problem here."

Guh. The trophies are not retroactive? I would be PISSED if I did a full run of games like Uncharted and found out that I had to do all that again.

I'm also afraid to update the FW now. My poor PS3.

Well, they wanted to prevent exactly what you were talking about. People downloading saves and adding trophies with no effort. Everyone starts at the same level. If your pissed about doing all the effort in Uncharted, don't worry, everyone else will have to start from the same place, just like you. If you don't want to play it again, then I guess your not getting those trophies! Personally, I want to play it again. I thought it was a great game.

Honestly, the only way I got through the game without swearing a lot was to download a save and turn on cheats. I swear, it's like there are endless enemies and they are all wearing kevlar... Maybe I'm getting impatient, but arena battles should not last more than 5 minutes. If they do, I start to notice that enemies keep appearing out of thin air over and over again.

What's strange is that the Burnout Paradise guys ARE making their achievements retroactive. I don't know if those are save based or whatever, but whatever achievements you unlocked before 2.4 will just become trophies after 2.4.

^ The reason that the Burnout Paradise guys are making their achievements retroactive is 'cause they planned for them and the BP saves are already user-locked.
