That's correct, but "outside" the mainstream, they always seem to be at the top and their new album might be considered the best album of the year. On both counts, I just can't get into them at all, so I'm always looking for new good music and what others like to listen to. Maybe outside the mainstream I might find something I actually like

Well, there's always some band being hyped as the next cool thing or whatever. Just ignore that if it's not your thing. There are a LOT of bands these days (most don't sound anything like Animal Collective, actually). I admit it takes work to wade through it to find stuff that really does it for you, but once you find one band you like it's easy to find associated bands/similar bands.

Maybe if you list some specific examples of the kind of thing you like, or the type of sound/genre people may be able to offer some relevant suggestions or point you in the right direction. Because, of course, we don't know what you'd consider "good music".

I like a lot of the rock genre, uptempo, country. Really, other than rap/hip hop, I'll listen to anything. Kinda hard to explain what "good music" is because it's such a broad thing.

Being a musician, I have had some long periods of snobbery, thankfully in the past, in my early 20's.

I used to hate all hip-hop, dance music, most country, and jam music.

I think there is something Jungian "shadow" about having a strong negative reaction to a type of music. Because over the years, I have come to love all the forms, and found I had stuff to learn from each. The "hate" was evidence of that.

I suggest Last.FM as a place to find music and artists you'd like. Every artist page has a 'related artists' page and I've used it and found dozens of other bands and singers that have been great.


And about Animal Collective. Just because visuals are what you would term psychedelic doesn't mean that the music is psychedelic. The last thing I would call AC is that.

Last. fm has been a goldmine for me as well and I've found it the best way to find bands. And they have radio stations programmed around related bands.

Also, when I find an intriguing band I sometimes go to Lala where you can queue up whole albums and listen to it once.

So true, colorful visuals do not make AC a psych band. They are experimental and difficult to categorize, but they aren't tagged as psych and are not a band that gets discussed on the psych boards I visit. You'd probably get in arguments if you labeled them as such.
Having said that I do like them, even if they aren't "homebase" for me. There aren't all that many rock bands who do stuff that isn't like much you've heard before (and do it well). I find them rather exhilarating, actually.

Still very general. That could describe a lot of different stuff, but if you like country I'd guess your tastes go in a more traditional or conventional direction. And both on Lala and Last fm a genre is divided up into sub-genres. Like alt-country, Americana under country.

I don't know, you might possibly like Conor Oberst, Fleet Foxes or Band of Horses. I couldn't suggest much, cause my musical tastes don't really go too deeply in this direction.
I like nauseating, druggy music.

I've been in rock radio over 30 years. I have loathed rap since its inception. The fact that people think it belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just plain nauseates me.

Crappy lyrics that don't rhyme, though they're delivered like they're supposed to. Some "songs" which take five people to "write"? Give me a f*ing break.

To me rap will always be disco without the notes ... or the effort ... or the talent.

There's plenty of rap which doesn't fall into the boxes you have set up, there. It's true that the majority of it is garbage, but that's nothing new for any genre.

What about The Arcade Fire? They're another band that really gets pushed heavily as "non-mainstream" (even though they arguably are, these days) and I think they have an awesome sound. Neon Bible is actually one of my favourite albums of the 2000s.

On the other hand, I'm generally no fan of rap, but 'Fight The Power' and 'Fuck Tha Police' are both high up in my iTunes 'most played' list - and again, I have no idea why; they just work for me. Musical taste is weird and capricious.

I'm more the opposite, I can dislike 99% of certain genre's, with a couple of exceptions. Most country music these days is re-purposed pop-garbage that gets higher acclaim because the singers appear to be "good ole boys/girls" that appeal to the common man (the same type of thinking that got us 8 years of W., but I digress...). But I still like the occasional Dolly Parton (though you can listen to something like 9 to 5 and, with slightly different production, it would have been on the pop stations, so what exactly is country music?)

Rap is spoken word poetry over a drum machine/synthesizer riff. Of course you can't be a thug/gangsta if you're reading poetry, so instead you're a "rapper". (I like the Beastie Boys, some Eminem, some Everlast stuff, a few Missy Elliot tracks). And it has no place being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or winning "rock/pop" Grammy's.

As for Shiny Happy People, I've always liked R.E.M. and love both their lighter stuff and their heavier stuff. SHP works for me on both levels, in it's intentionally ironic mode and as a pure pop song that happens to be performed by some artists with a modicum of talent and no autotune. And of course my own personal interpretation of the video [sblock]We create God in our image, and we should be responsible for doing the things we yap about in the "name of God", otherwise the whole illusion just falls apart, though maybe we would be better off if we let it and just fix things on our own. The music that I love, Bebop and "Cool Jazz", was written and performed before I was even born. I grew up in the 1960's and 70's, and the music of that era still connects with me. I'd take a Donna Summer disco tune over a rap recording any day.

My hatred for rap is pretty well-know...I ranted on it on this forum last year but I couldn't find it when I searched.

It's not just the race hatred, disrespect of women and law enforcement, and glorification of drugs and violence that disgusts me...it's also the total lack of any musical ability on the part of the so-called "artists". When I was in school, I was taught that music had to have three elements: melody, harmony, and rhythm. Rap has totally disposed of the first two elements, leaving only rhythm. For that reason it shouldn't even be considered music.

But it's not just rap, either, because the entire music scene is rife with no-talent poseurs. I watched the Grammys last spring; the Jonas Brothers shouldn't even be in the same room with Stevie Wonder, much less share the stage with him. Whoever told Miley Cyrus she could sing? I have ears of stone and even I could tell she was flat, under all that vibrato. And the woman who performed "I Kissed a Girl"? Not if she heard you sing first, sweetheart.

On "American Idol" the judges tell potential "stars" that they need to have "the whole package"...meaning, in addition to passable singing ability, they have to look good and be able to follow choreography. They put musical ability on the same level as marketability. Once upon a time, in order to be considered a musician, you had to be able to sing, write songs and play an instrument...not just lip-synch and look good in the video.

The music industry has been dumbed-down to the point where the average dumb-ass American can't tell whether someone has put in years of practice or mere weeks. Playing an instrument at a high level is no longer respected in American culture. Sometimes I think all those kids who are studying music in college are wasting their time and their parents' money...since hardly anyone pays for music anymore, why should they? Why spend all those long hours perfecting your craft, knowing that in all liklihood your songs will just be illegally downloaded for free?

But then, the Jonas Brothers, Miley, Kanye West and Ludacris probably make more in a week than I'll earn in my entire life. So who's the idiot? Maybe it's me.
