Songs that defined the 70s

I'd say part of what defined the Seventies was that the Sixties were over...so somebody has to give a shout-out to these #1 singles from 1970:

"Let It Be"
"The Long and Winding Road"

The Stones churned out a number of strong singles throughout the decade. I'll give a shout-out to "Miss You".

And I'll thumb my nose at rock purists by throwing in "Silly Love Songs" by Wings.

Bands who are associated primarily with the Sixties get no respect in Seventies threads. How about "Roadhouse Blues" and "L.A. Woman" by the Doors?

And the Seventies being the decade that the King of Rock 'n' Roll shuffled off his mortal coil, how about a hunk o' hunk o' "Burning Love"?

And let's not forget Vietnam--"War" by Edwin Starr (HUH! GOOD GOD Y'ALL!), "Ohio" by CSN&Y, and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'round the Old Oak Tree" by Tony Orlando & Dawn.

"Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel

"Paradise by the Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf

"You're So Vain" and "Nobody Does It Better" by Carly Simon

Has nobody mentioned the likes of "Come Sail Away" by Styx, or "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" by Queen?

It got played out for me long ago, but there's the entire freakin' soundtrack to Grease.

"King Tut" by Steve Martin

"Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh

"The Ballroom Blitz" by the Sweet

It didn't do anything over here, but I understand that "Mull of Kintyre" was a monster hit for Wings in the U.K.--bigger than anything Paul had done with the Beatles.

Do I have to be the one to mention the Village People? OK, I won't....

I don't know if this song *defined* the 70's, but it was one of my favorite songs that was popular then:

"Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" by The Hollies

Although I think the 70's were really defined by every Alan Parsons Project album ever recorded from the first one (Tales of Mystery and Imagination) to...what was their last 70's work...The Turn of a Friendly Card.
