Song Of The Space Whale

Mr. Sin

Commander
It's been mentioned by some that "The Beast Below" has a few things in common with this unused classic series story, which was written for various Doctors but never went into production.

It almost seems like this new season is doing a few retreads, but of stories that never were (SOSW) or stories that are forever lost (Power of the Daleks)

Has anybody read and could verify this?

well The Beast Below has a few things in common with "Planet of the Ood" both had a song, and both had a giant brain at one point.

Yeah I noticed that, they also had a few British people in it, the Doctor and a Ginger companion.

Doctor Who has been going for 46 years. You're bound to hit some similar paths. Heck, the last 10 years of the Star Trek TV franchise consisted of one retread after another (at least according to the fans and critics). As far as I'm concerned they could do a scene by scene remake of Genesis of the Daleks if they want to, as long as the writing is strong and the acting is good.

Back in the 60s it was fairly common for longer-running series to do full-out remakes of episodes from only a few years earlier. The Avengers comes immediately to mind as several of the Emma Peel classics were remakes of Cathy Gale episodes. So things could be worse.

If we have the Doctor waking up one morning to find a new companion named Romana on the TARDIS and a mission to find the Key to Time, then I'll start complaining about stories being too similar to what came before. ;)

Wasn't the plan for McGann's era (if it were to be made) to be out and out remakes through and through?

Sort of-- that was back when they were thinking the TVM would reboot it all with a new origin story.

ah, I thought they were still gonna go ahead with that even after McCoy got shot and everything. So were they gonna go with all new stories if the pilot had sold well?

No, the outline bible for the Fox/BBC series suggested remaking quite a few earlier stories - and not always the ones you'd expect, as The Gunfighters (aka 'Don't Shoot, I'm a Doctor') and The Smugglers were on the list.
