the command hand-over might not be the same as the promotion to Fleet Captain. (in fact, now, we know its not.) Kirk may have not even seen Pike when he took command.

was that even Mendez, or was that the Talosians????? I forget. Was there EVER a real Mendez?!!
I just look at it as awkward dialogue meant to make for casual banter between Mendez and Kirk before he shows him a crippled, disfigured man in an electronic wheelchair. It's never been good dialogue, but one can interpret it in different ways.
Where did he not job in the later seasons of TNG?
While in DS9, he wasn't made to job, I don't remember him being that badass.
Worf in DS9 was way more badass than he was in most of TNG.
Oh yeah, that scene. Yeah he was bad ass in that moment.
The Talosians turned that illusion over to an intern.
And Kirk's just there because he received orders to come to Starbase 11. He's just going through the motions until he realizes it's Christopher Pike and sees his terrible medical condition.
I always liked what the Jem'Hadar said. "I can not defeat this man. I can only kill him, and that no longer interests me."
My two cents: the best superhero story ever, Watchmen, is not canon. The best Batman story ever, The Dark Knight Returns, is not canon. The best Spider-Man ongoing comic, Ultimate Spider-Man, is not canon. "Canon" is just background stuff, not a seal of quality.

Watchmen's a bit too canon, as DC can't resist bringing characters back instead of letting it be its own thing.

Right, but that's only a recent thing, from Rebirth onwards. When it was made, and for whole decades, Watchmen was not canon, so the point stands: you don't need to be canon to be great, or even the GOAT.
I just don't know how we are still having this "its all the same universe" argument after Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow spelled it out for us.
Because the people in charge keep saying it is. And then proceed to make creative decisions that are contrary to that idea.
Because it's all the same universe, simply altered.
The prime universe has had so many examples of time travel throughout the years, it's the only option. Otherwise, what really is the prime timeline? Every single example of time travel would equal a new universe being formed and means that we haven't been following the prime timeline since a few episodes into season 1 of TOS.
