Something a bit different...

B.J.

Rear Admiral
This is the start of something I came up with recently. I just sketched out the basic shapes, and I liked the way it looked, so I started fleshing it out a bit.

It's far from finished yet, and of course it's missing all the regular details, but I wanted to put this out for comments. If it's not clear, the engineering hull has a sort of wasp-waist in the front view. Any likes/dislikes, anything you guys think needs improving, or any other suggestions?

Madman's right, I definitley think this could work with a sphere.

And that beltline paint job on the engineering hull is rockin!!

Love the shape, very nice "flow" to it. I wonder, what if it were a Romulan design instead? (I don't know why, that's the first impression that popped into my head)...

Looking forward to more.

TOS Oberth comes to my mind very neat idea there
small science vessel possibly or perimeter Action ship
Very neat concept :techman::techman::techman::techman:

Thanks guys! Nice to know it doesn't look absolutely hideous to everyone else! :D

I did take a look at a few options for a spherical primary hull. I admit, they look nice, although I do prefer my original saucer (on bottom). What do you guys think?

I rather like the your first approach, with the saucer.
I think it matches the curved shapes, the overall "feel" of the design. Of the sphere variants, I like #2, with the chopped bottom and small dome.

Looking forward to this thread, I like when we get a cool, unique design like this in the trek universe. :)

Cool!

Sometimes it's worth doing something unusual just to see where it takes you. I think you're onto something. This definately looks pre TOS, maybe mid to late 22nd century. But the nacelle caps evoke the nuAbramsprise--not ot so good.

Maybe because the front looks kind of like an inverted KBOP head? It's a known fact that the KBOP was originally going to be an RBOP until they re-wrote Trek 3 to feature Klingons instead.

Nice. :)

I think the spherical hull really does it. Maybe try one with the large sphere chopped off at the midway on top and bottom, with a smaller part above and below, so that you get a fat ring around it. Does that make sense?

If anything I think the saucer should be thinner and either wider or longer than you original version. I think the sperical forward hulls look pretty terrible, I've never liked them on Fed stuff.

Thanks for the comments, guys! I went ahead and built a very rough Sketchup model just to see if there were any glaring problems with the overall configuration. The only things I see is that the nacelles look way too high in the front/aft views, and the neck needs to be wider in the top view. Other than that, the proportions look pretty good to me.

Nacelles tilted to the sides with maybe a slight sweep to the plyons, thicken the neck and it will be sweet.

I like your original design, especially now that I've seen a different angle, and wouldn't change a thing - just fill in details. :bolian:

The proportions are good for what looks like an early survey ship or freighter, just adjust the attachment point of the pylon and the engine, and thicken the neck horizontally. As for the engines, they're currently attached to the pylons from their inner surface. I'd recommend moving the attachment point towards the outer half of the nacelle. The pylon attachment to the hull looks fine.
