"...some of the worst cinematography ever"?

The issue is not so much the shaky cam as the cuts. They are incredibly frequent.

Ah, well thats the editor's issue as well.

Still, my statement about him calling Abrams an idiot for utilizing styles that seem to be used ALL OVER the show he is promoting in his sig and avatar is ironic.

Cloverfield was filmed in that style on purpose, that was the point of the film, the hand held look.

I honestly don't get why people are surprised at the "shakey cam" thing on Cloverfield. Were they supposed to have steady cams for home movies like the rest of the world does?

I donno, me neither.

I mean that was part of the point of the film.

I give this movie 5/5, and I thought there really were a lot of lens flares...they don't look as bad as they did when I watched clips on my computer, but it's undeniable there are alot...whether you actually notice them or not...and NO I was not looking for them.

About the editing...it's nowhere near as bad as the Bourne movies...it adequately shows how fast action can be...but you shouldn't get sea sick.

I tend to get very bored during action sequences (fell asleep during one of the Matrix's in the cinema) but I enjoyed these thoroughly. They were never too long, the fights were never too theatrical.. I felt they always served the plot well.

Shaky hand held shots, shaky extreme closeups, shaky w/ lens flares, shaky CGI, I was on the verge of a major headache by the time the damn thing was over.

Since Abrams was the director, and he has to approve the cinematography, yeah, he's an idiot.

Would it be sick irony if it turned out that George Lucas was the last remaining producer/director in Hollywood that knew how to actually FILM a movie?

What the H**L is the point of spending millions of dollars building a set, a cg model, or scouting a location shoot and then rendering the audience unable to appreciate it because of "docu cam" and lens flares?

Abrams did NOT direct Cloverfield. Plus, just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it didn't make sense. Abrams even said that it's a not a film for everyone.

I thought the action sequences were great, and the rest of the audience seemed to agree with me. I think the way they were shot gave them more, dunno, life. It seemed so real to me. :techman:

Back in MY day...movies meant something. Why one could walk to the theater downtown and see the latest Gable flick for a quarter for a matinee! Course, what with the war and all popcorn was being rationed to help the boys on the front lines defending us from the Germans.

Why...I remember when a scene lasted for 3 days and there was no movement! That was art I tells ya.

What I really want to know, is has this been leaked yet? I've heard rumors, but am actually suprised that a report hasn't surfaced yet. If someone in the piracy community hasn't bribed an usher to film (and such a thing would be very profitable!) then shame on the pirating community. Well, they're shamed anyway as a matter of fact, but extra shame on this one.

Does Chris Pine use "Kirk Fu" when fighting? If not, then I'm afraid that this movie will rate no high than a 3 for any action/fight scenes.

Haven't quite worked out how to use mininova and bitlord yet, huh?

Going by what SalvorHardin said, even if I didn't have a clue about torrents, it would be a waste of time learning - and mininova? Isn't the pirate bay the one thats infamous for all these movie leaks (I could swear they've been in the spotlight whenever an anticipated movie is leaked)?

I'll have to sit back further in the theater than usual. That should help smooth out the ride. That helped for Cloverfield.

As a non action movie goer I have this comment to make about action movies...in most of the action movies I've seen it's difficult to follow along with what exactly is going on.....so this is par for the course.

As far as people expressing displeasure in the film URBAN...I'm sorry but that's what a message board is for...there are going to be people on both sides of the fence and as much as you may be sick of hearing people bitch...they're probably sick of hearing people praise ........so it really goes both ways and we're all not going to agree...

Can someone 'splain about the Lens flares and why they are purposely done?

Straight from the horses mouth

Abrams:

[Smiles] I don't know what you're talking about. [Laughs] I'm kidding. I know what you're saying with the lens flares. It was one of those things... I wanted a visual system that felt unique. I know there are certain shots where even I watch and think, "Oh that's ridiculous, that was too many."

But I love the idea that the future was so bright it couldn't be contained in the frame.
The flares weren't just happening from on-camera light sources, they were happening off camera, and that was really the key to it. I want [to create] the sense that, just off camera, something spectacular is happening. There was always a sense of something, and also there is a really cool organic layer thats a quality of it.
