Some changes I'd have made

Ensign Benson

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Hi folks!

New member here. I've been a TOS fan since childhood. I still think it's the best of all the series. There are a couple of things that really bothered me about it though:

1. The multi-colored uniforms always bugged me, even as a small child. Uniforms should be uniform, dang it!

2. Spock looked so cool with a beard, he should have always had it!

So, having had a lot of time on my hands recently, I photoshopped a few pics fixing those problems. If someone can tell me how to upload pics, I'll post a few and let you see if you like them.

The designs are consistently uniform. The different colors indicate different departments/specialties.

True, but, why?

With a few necessary exceptions like people working on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, most uniformed services consider small badges and patches to be sufficient for differentiating between departments/specialties. The multiple colored uniforms in TOS and TNG always irked me. Especially the bright red shirts that stood out so glaringly and got their owners killed so often.

They got it right in the movies starting with TWOK, although I'd have rather seen blue uniforms, since it'd be more nautical.

I know that Rodenberry said that Star Fleet was not the military, but if that were the case, what's with all the guns, ranks and uniforms? And why does Star Fleet patrol and defend the Federation, and repel invaders etc? That all sounds like a job for the military.

Jacques Cousteau didn't have armed guards and deck guns on the Calypso, after all.

Well, one of the possible reasons the uniforms were multi color is because Star Trek was one of the first color television shows out there. They probably went color happy. :D

A lot of TV shows that went to color used very vibrant and startling color patterns.

The "Starfleet is not a military" stuff started with TNG.

Since we're in the TOS forum, that doesn't apply here. :techman:

Awesome! I knew I'd found the right place. :techman:

I'll bet the whole color TV thing is the actual explanation. IIRC, in the two pilots everybody wore pretty muted colors. NBC must have wanted them to jazz it up.

Is there a way to load pics from offline files? I'm pretty proud of some of these, and would love to show them off.

You'll need to use a web site like photobucket to host the images, then post the links here. You can also post proper photo links one you reach the rank of Ensign (I think)

Welcome to the forum!

Yeah.. no. NBC was an all-color network when Star Trek premiered, and there were quite a lot of in-color shows prior to it, including Batman.

Okay, here's my first attempt to post a pic.

AAAAAAAAND it didn't work.

Captain Kirk in a blue shirt. I put a wreath around the star in his assignment patch as an indicator that he's the CO. I think the patches and rank stripes would have looked better in black.
