Sofia Boutella added to ST3 Cast

Plus it'd be weird to make such a big deal of introducing Carol Marcus and making her part of the crew, only to then immediately write her out of the next movie.

I honestly didn't get the vibe that she was a permanent member of the crew - more like a special guest appearance.

I think either happening in a more memorable film would have had an even bigger effect. The strongest feature of TSFS was that it paved the way for The Voyage Home. Well, OK, maybe that, Mr. Adventure and McCoy-Spock. Especially McCoy-Spock who, together with Archer-Surak, make up some of the finest moments in Star Trek for me. Poor T'Pol.

Anyway, another potential speculation for who Sofia Boutella might be playing:

I can already picture a scene where she kicks Kirk's ass (seriously, he gets his ass beat in every movie now it seems). My first thought was that she'd play a Klingon, but I could also see her playing a Romulan, or Vulcan, etc.

Or giving older Kirk (Shatner) one last fling before dying for good.

She had to, despite her prejudice, deal and accept Surak's katra in Archer's head, which was entirely inspired by the hilarious moment of McCoy accepting Spock's katra in his head. Kudos to Nimoy for coming up with the "Remember" line.

That covers Spock's rebirth and the humour in half of TVH as well. Spock in McCoy's head is so priceless (in every regard), that it makes you forget that TSFS wasn't as enjoyable as it might have been.

If she plays a Vulcan, could she be T'Pring? That's assuming T'Pring survived the destruction of Vulcan.

Although I personally haven't liked the Spock-Uhura romance in the reboot, bringing in T'Pring for nuSpock's Pon Farr might be played for comedic value easily.

if you follow the comics, T'pring survived (and she's very different) but using her for a soap opera with S/U wouldn't make sense since, well, in this reality he 'broke up' with her when he left for the academy making her free to pick a different mate (and consequently making him free too, even though this all happened before he even met Uhura)
if they use the comics as canon and inspiration, well that T'pring could have potential and I could definitely see Sofia playing her especially if they are looking for a twist in terms of villains. After the destruction of Vulcan, I wouldn't find it so far fetched to believe that there might be vulcans that lost their mind because of the grief they felt and they now seek revenge against the romulans or hold the federation responsible for not stopping Nero. The comics had hinted something about that already.

I don't want too much comedic in this film. one thing about the s/u romance in star trek 2009 is that it was executed well and was heart felt. in the second film it was reduced to a comedic relief and was barely heart felt.

Why did they "drop" her anyway? Given how big they made of her in TWOK, her complete lack of appearances in any of the other films really stuck out as weird.

Harve Bennett (or Bebe Besche?) mentioned in a "Starlog" interview how he had to contact Bebe Besche to apologize that he couldn't use her in ST III. He made sure she understood it wasn't due to her acting ability, but the storyline placed blame on David Marcus for protomatter.

Bennett made a huge deal of balancing the script - eg. for Kirk to get back Spock, he had to lose more than he gained: ie. David and the Enterprise. If Carol was to be present in ST III, the script would have had to explain how David worked in protomatter into the device without her knowing, or... she had to be made a co-instigator, in which case nature's balance would demand that she, too, would have to be killed off. And Bennett thought that he might use the character again one day.
