Social anxiety disorder?

Hey vampgrrl,

I'm an expert in social anxiety (lol). I'm new here, and don't think I've earned the right to exchange private messages with members on this site yet. My email is my forum name @gmail.com, if you want to chat. :)

What's odd to me is the social anxiety aspect is related to socializing or worrying that people think I'm ugly or no one likes me.

Again for school or work...no problem. It has less to do with me (in my mind) and more to do with the task at hand I guess. I made several speeches in public speaking class off the cuff (made an A), or making a presentation in class is no big deal, and I was briefly interviewed on TV last fall. No problem. I don't get that...or should I say I don't understand why I can do THAT.

It is not unusual for social anxiety to take very specific and exclusive forms. A lot of people with mild social anxiety have one specific phobia like writing or using a toilet in public. I myself do pretty well in situations which can be fairly scripted like when I am just responding to someone's question. However when I have to take initiative like a phone call or entering some place I have never been before I start to go into panic mode.

Some men find it difficult to use a public urinal. (I believe the colloquial phrase is "pee-shy.") When I'm in that situation, I find that doing math in my head helps me relax enough to get my business done. Long division works especially well.

Of course, if your reluctance to use public toilets stems from a germ phobia, that's a different issue altogether.
