Sobriety Checkpoint

What the hell happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Stopping you to check your eyes/smell your breath isn't accusing you of any crime. You're still innocent.

What's next? Are the cops going to start searching random houses just to make sure nobody has anything illegal in them? Cause there could be a gun inside, or drugs, or a pointy stick maybe? Something that could hurt someone..

Yes. Walking into your house, private property, and looking for illegal substances (without a warrant) is exactly the same thing as stopping you along a road and saying, "How you doing tonight?" while looking to see if your eyes are dilated, and whiffing the air. Exactly the same.

Except not.

Yes, I will be much happier when the police start checking my car and house on a weekly basis for me. How very kind of them! If only there was a way they could check my thoughts as well!!

In your car on a public road your rights are... limited. Furthered by the fact that diriving is a privelige and not a right. 20000 people die in the US every year thanks to DUI. If these road stops and minor inconviences that don't harm a single one of your rights reduce that number to 19999 then they're worth it.

It's not a violation of your rights at all to stop you on the road, ask you to roll down the window, have the officer look in your car, smell for alcohol on your breath/in the car and look to see if your eyes are glassy/speech is slurred. It doesn't harm any of your rights. Not. A. One.

You're not being convicted of any crime.

You're not being accused of any crime.

You are on public property.

You're being inconvienced. You're being stopped so an officer can make a quick check to see if you're not doing something illegal, again on public property. Why is this being done? Because assholes like to get in their cars, drive drunk, and end up killing people.
