Oh, the other one I've rolled around in my head was that he just gave up on Time Lord culture. He felt like it was going in a bad direction but that his efforts to change it for the better hadn't accomplished anything and (ironically) he figured "what can one person do?" so he left.

So why do YOU think the Doctor left Gallifrey in the first place...?
