So, where you from?

I just returned from a midwest trip, which included a visit to Riverside, Iowa, the future birthplace of Capt. James T. Kirk. (At least in the original timeline). I really got a kick out of it. There wasn't much there - just a marker behind a building. A few signs. Even a small little Star Trek exhibit. But it was fun being there.
I was just wondering, who else has made the trek (pun intended) to Riverside, Iowa? Cosmic thoughts?

No. Not ever. I've only ever spent a total of about 6 or 7 hours in the US and there are other places in the world (and, indeed, the USA) that I'd rather visit first...

I went to the Trekfest for the first time but didn't go to the parade. Didn't see the marker or anything in town other than just driving through the place. Now I wish I would have- sounded like a pretty big one (relatively speaking of course). At the nearby casino George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, and Walter Koenig gave a talk. I didn't think it was too well organized- Nichols pretty much dominated the talking and the guys were too polite to get much of a word in edgewise. I got a kick out of Takei :) he complimented Iowa on choosing Obama in the caucuses and then having our state supreme court legalize same-sex marriage.

It was a fun cross-state mini-vacation. This was the first time for about 20 years since I've been to anything Star Trek related. When I was a kid Omaha used to have a convention once a year or so but I don't think they do anymore.

On the way back we stopped at the American Gothic house (the house that is in the Grant Wood painting) and intended to drive through Vedic City (the new town created by the Maharishi University) but couldn't find the darn place! Being a bunch of goofs we concluded the Vedicans must have obtained a cloaking device.

I agree. I wouldn't design a trip around it, but it was fun to see since I was literally passing through.

I'm from the SF Bay Area, and for two years, I worked "across the bay, in Alameda". Other than that, I've never been anywhere Trek-related. If I happen to be in Alberta, I might drop by Vulcan just for fun.

It's not Riverside, but in the San Fernando Valley, there's the Tillman Water Reclaimation Plant that served as Starfleet Academy/HQ in TNG and DS9, and California State University Northridge, which portrayed the Academy in Star Trek X.
