Absolutely. Stories like Power of the Daleks, Genesis of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks are wonderful. It can be done but with some patience and extra work.
Of the three, I've only seen "Genesis" (own it actually) and yes, it's a good story. I think that's more of it being beyond the Dalek's just running around saying "Ex-term-inate!" There's a real story there and it's compelling.
I'd also like to add "The Dalek Invasion Of Earth" in there as well....probably my favorite Dalek story. Much grimmer than I expected a show of that era to be, and loved the bittersweet ending with Susan....not to mention some forward progession in terms of change not usually seen in American t.v. where the previous weeks events were rarely, if ever, referenced.
Also, got my first classic Cybermen story for Christmas, Troughton era "Tomb Of The Cybermen". Haven't watched the whole thing yet.....but oddly enough....these guys are creepier by far than all later iterations, IMO.
Absolutely. Check out The Tenth Planet when you can. I think they're even creepier there with their sing-song voices and spare parts.
I too am surprised that we're getting a Dalek episode so soon but maybe it will be like "Dalak" back from series one and they won't appear. I am looking forward to it, I was not a fan of the new Pete's World Cybermen, the old classic Cybermen are the best. My aunt apperently used to be terrified of the Cybermen as a child lol. The Dalak's do indeed look retro as does most things about series five. EXTERMIATE EXTERMINATE!! *BANG* the Doctor hits it over the head with a piece of wood (it was so quick I can't remember what it was he bashed it with).

Me, my favorite Daleks were from The Dead Planet to Genesis. For the rest of the classic years, the Daleks were deduced to mindless drones, thanks to Nation's insistence of having Davros in each post Genesis story. Davros was boring and overused, should have stayed dead after Genesis.
Dalek, Parting of Ways, Doomsday, [Stolen Earth[/i] and Journey's End (And I don't include the last two being good because of Davros, he was just window dressing.) were good.
I'd only change the colors of the Daleks....gold were for leader Daleks in the classic stories. If gold was reserved for the Cult of Skaro, it would be ok. I say either give the Daleks their classic 1960's colors, or the 1970's/1980's gunmetal colors. I also would LOVE to see some classic Daleks appear also (Can use the Remembereance designs...the black supreme looked awesome and that one was made by a fan, not the BCC themselves).

Daleks are fine as long as it's a good story. There doesn't even need to be Daleks in it.
"Dalek" was great as as the end of Series 1. I even liked "Doomsday". But the end of Series 4 where Donna turns a few knobs and flips a few switches and POOF she defeats gagillions of Daleks was a bit much for me. I loved the rest of the story, but that part was a big WTF for me.

These Daleks come from the void way back in season 2. Winston Churchhill militarizes them and has them serve tea.

For my money, while I would have preferred for the Dalek in "Dalek" to be the last of his kind, I thought the Daleks were well used in "Bad Wolf"/"The Parting of the Ways" and "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday." (Sorry, but the Daleks coming out of the sphere was one of the best cliffhangers ever -- "LIFE FORMS DETECTED. EXTERMINATE. EXTERMINATE. EXTERMINATE!")
I also loved "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End." Yes, it was big, bombastic, etc. But what can I say? I loved the idea of seeing a full-scale Dalek invasion. (Really, all the Whoniverse productions since have dropped the ball on that one -- the entire geopolitical balance of power on Earth should have been completely disrupted by the destruction of the military aparati of every major world power.)
So, for my money, really, the only truly bad Dalek story that nuWho has done was "Daleks in Manhattan"/"Evolution of the Daleks." And even then, really, it was "Evolution of the Daleks" that sucked moreso than "Daleks in Manhattan." (It really is amazing what one bad story can do to a villain's reputation!)

I'm pretty sure that the BBC's agreement with the Nation Estate involves the BBC paying a very hefty sum of money in exchange for the rights to use the Daleks, so it makes sense that programming executives would be rather insistent that the show get something out of the investment.
I wasn't a big fan of Dalak's in Manhattan/Evolution of the Dalak's either. I thought "Dalak" was a really powerful episode and really I think the first time that Rose challenges the Doctor and forces him to look at what the Time War has made him become, I think he was real close to the Valeyard in that episode. All of that righteous and frustrated anger. This loan Dalak managed to survive the Time War when his people and family didn't.

Terry Nation created the Daleks and owned them. The rights are now with his family, though they (and his other rights/possessions: i.e., his "estate") are administered by a third party on their behalf.
I've heard about this before, and if this is true, I'm actually a bit excited because it reminds me of one of my favorite Dalek stories, Power of the Daleks. However, if this is true, then that means I was off about the Daleks looking like they were returning to a more Classic design.

The Nation estate is the surviving family of Terry Nation, who created the Daleks in 1963. The estate holds the copyright to the concept of the Daleks, which means that the BBC must retain the estate's permission -- through large sums of money -- in order to continue using them.
I don't think that's quite right, as I understand it, they share the IPR for the Daleks so neither can do anything without the say-so of the other, that's why Nation was never able to sell it for big bags of cash to anyone else because it was very difficult to exploit.
Sure the estate can say "you can't use the Daleks" but that makes no money for the estate because they can't appear anywhere else without the permission of the BBC.
^ Exactly. They were designed by Ray Cusick, who was a BBC employee at the time, so they have a stake in the physical appearance.
And did not get much out of that like Nation and BBC did...he's the real unsung hero. Plus many of Nation's scripts had to be heavily edited and modified.
Other way around... he remembers them, they've got amnesia - or are faking amnesia for their own purposes...
