The Resistance are the Viet Cong to the Republic's North Vietnam. Seems pretty simple.

I mean, it's a comparison of tactics, not of ideology per se. Obviously the New Republic is supposed to be a liberal democracy rather than the political dictatorship that both North and South Vietnam constituted. Another comparison would be, New Republic = France, Resistance = Continental Army, First Order = British Empire in North America.

I mean, they all apply. In all these instance, you have two sovereign states (the New Republic and the First Order) and a militia within one of those sovereign states waging asymmetric (or sometimes symmetric, in the case of the Continental Army) warfare against it, with the support of the other.

No no no, you've got it all wrong...the Empire is a loaf of bread, the First Order is a toaster, the Resistance is a refrigerator and the New Republic is a grilled cheese sandwich!

I suspect that the decision's been taken here - by whom exactly? - to keep all the analogies used in this thread politically uncomfortable for anyone who doesn't like the proposition that "Palpatine, Tarkin and Vader were right".
