So what are you reading now? (Part 3)

I was reading 'Congo' by Michael Crichton...but....but...

But, what? I read Congo many years ago, when I was in junior high, I think. If you read any more of Crichton's books, I'd advise you stay well away from Rising Sun, it was as dull as dirt. I'd highly recommend Sphere, though, it's one of my favorite Crichton novels.

Rising Sun's actually my favourite of his books - but I loved Congo, Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park as well.

Couldn't get past page 50 of Timeline, and I hear the movie's even worse...

I enjoyed Jurassic Park and The Lost World by him. Airframe was quite good too, but a lot of the story seemed like filler to get it to book length.

I actually loved Timeline, it's second favorite of his books after Jurassic Park. Although I've never read Lost World, Andromenda Strain, Congo, or Airframe.

^Oh, so that film's actually based on the Matheson story they did on The Twilight Zone? I thought it seemed similar.

Yep, they bought the rights from Richard years ago.

It strikes me that Russell Crowe would have been a better casting choice than Hugh Jackman.

Won't be the same without Lee Marvin...

I admit I was hearing Marvin's voice in my head the whole time I was reading the story last night.

Funny bit of trivia: the original story is set in the distant future of . . . 1997!

I'm currently reading "Fifteen Hours" by Mitchel Scanlon.

Next up is Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett:)

Was it a rush job, or did anyone actually care about it?

Those aren't necessarily incompatible. Sometimes deadlines are really, really tight, and no matter how much you care, you still have to rush.

I can see having a deadline you HAVE to hit for a movie novelization, etc. but this was just sad, especially for a hardcover. If you're charging a premium price then quality should be the main factor, not hitting an arbitrary deadline.

I know that deadlines are often out of the hands of authors and editors but this particular situation was very badly handled.

Hood by Steven Lawhead its quite a read so far I was reading Mcdermont's series of books Hunt for Atlantis,Tomb of Hercules, and two others I plan getting once I get a job or have my business starting up in the fall I think.

That's all

Signed

Recently, I have been reading through the Trek novels penned by Peter David. I have finished New Frontier up to and including "Being Human." I read "Strike Zone" as I was intrigued by the appearance of "Moron" as a Klingon Ambassador. Now progressing through "A Rock and a Hard Place" and finding myself discomfited with the character of Quentin Stone, though I realize he was the forerunner to Mackenzie Calhoun. Afterwards, I may delve into a more recent release, such as "Children of Kings"

i just ordered four books:
The Calling
Mirror Universe: The Sorrows of Empire
New Frontier: Treason
Voyager: Unworthy

but i just started reading a singular destiny. ive got three days to finish it :)

It was the last line I read before having to put the book down but, in Vulcan's Glory...

Castillo is Captain Garratt's son?!?!

^Umm, first off, do you mean Vulcan's Heart? Vulcan's Glory is a Pike-era Spock story.

Second, where in VH does it say that about Castillo?

Vulcan's Heart, sorry.

I had to drop the book and go, but somewhere around page140, just as we get to the Enterprise-C, they seem to imply Castillo's her son, after she calls him "Richard".

As I said, I had to drop the book and go. I probably should have waited until I can go back and double-check before posting...

I read The Lost Era: The Sundered and Titan: The Red King. I'm deciding between continuing on with the Titan series (as I've read the first two books now) or switching off to read another Sulu M&M novel with Forged in Fire. [Edit: Oh, I also finally read To Reign in Hell (the conclusion of Greg Cox's Kahn series).]

While Forged in Fire is good, I'd say go with more Titan, Orion's Hounds is friggin' awsome.

I found it on p. 164 of the paperback.
"Signal if you need me. I'll be in sickbay. And Richard..." Garrett paused and saw the people around her grin. Only my mother ever calls me "Richard," Castillo always said.

"Yes, Captain?"

This time even Garrett had to suppress a grin at the good-little-boy voice. Yes, Captain: Yes, Mother.

That's not saying she's his mother. It's saying that she's calling him something that, according to him, only his mother calls him, so people are grinning at the irony of someone who isn't his mother calling him that. And then he plays along by jokingly responding as if she were his mother. If she actually were his mother, there'd be no joke and no reason for anyone to grin.
