So what are you reading now? (Part 3)

After watching the Ashes to Ashes finale (which was very good; I doubt Lost's finale will be as satisfying) I had to finish the second Life on Mars Companion. There don't seem to be any similar books for A2A, unfortunately.

Now to read a couple of graphic novels/comic book reprint collections: the second Kull compilation from Dark Horse and the second DC/Vertigo collection of the current House of Mystery series, to be followed by some IDW Trek stuff, probably.

It'll probably be a little while before I get to it, but I didn pick up Children of Kings. I'm a big fan of Pike, thanks to The Cage, Trek '09 and Early Voyages, so I'm really looking forward to this.

Just started the TNG novel Losing the Peace. I was going to read A Singular Destiny as a follow-up to the Destiny trilogy that I finished last night, but according to the author notes, Losing the Peace takes place first.

Since I read two novels at a time, I also started Douglas Adams' Starship Titanic by Terry Jones.

^Technically, yeah, most of LtP comes before ASD, but its epilogue comes after and spoils aspects of ASD. Though if you've been following the boards at all, or the announcements of upcoming books, it's not really much of a spoiler anymore.

I finished a reread of Burning Dreams over the weekend. It's a great piece of character study, and it's much better than your standard biography. The device of starting a chapter in one place and jumping backward in time to tell about the main events of the chapter was a little overused for my taste, especially since the novel deals with many more than two time periods. I would like to see more of the Pike-Vina interaction between 2267 and 2320, but the epilogue would lose some of its power if we saw what they were up to.

Right now, I'm reading The Final Reflection. I gave up after the first chapter last time because it wasn't what I was looking for. This time, I'm taking the novel on its own terms and am finding much more to enjoy after getting to that same place. I'll chime in with some more thoughts when I finish it.

I've just read flashforward and I had a quick look at, and then put back down again, Shards and Shadows. I've never been keen on the Mirror Universe but thought I might give it another go but the stories I checked out did nothing for me. I might have another read later simply to see if the writers manage to shoe-horn in lipstick lesbians into every story.

Am currently absorbing Best of Trek #4. Still loving 70's/80's fandom and the speculations on Trek from back then. I'll probably end up getting them all at this rate.

Some of those people go a little OTT on the Trek/Spock/Rodenberry worship.

Also still reading DS9 Twilight. Enjoyable.

Sadly, there were no lesbians in my MU story in GLASS EMPIRES. Clearly, I dropped the ball . . . .

Nrgh, mustn't make comments about lesbians and balls...

I was really hoping for a mirror universe interdimensional time travel T'Pol/Hoshi/Kira/Kira/Old Dax/New Dax/Leeta love-in when I got to Shards and Shadows.

Oh well...

Why would you hope for that? Even the regular "love-ins" between couples are the literary equivalent of moving the camera to the crackling fireplace. Let's leave the plotless fun to our imaginations or the realm of fanfic.

Reading Cthulhu's Reign, an anthology edited by Darrell Schweitzer that looks at the world after Cthulhu and his ilk take over. It's a concept that turns up surprisingly rarely in Cthulhu Mythos fiction, so this should be different from the usual mythos collection. Plus there are some contributors with strong track records: Brian Stableford, Jay Lake, Ian Watson, and others.

I've just started the "Errand of Vengeance" trilogy. So far I've been impressed--never had I heard of Kevin Ryan prior, but I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of his work. The novels follow a Klingon agent posing as a security officer aboard Kirk's Enterprise. Makes me wonder if Vanguard didn't draw some inspiration for Anna Sandesjo from Ryan's series.

^ The precedent for Klingons surgically altered to appear human and working as spies within the Federation was established in the TOS episode "The Trouble With Tribbles."
