So what are you reading now? (Part 3)

Starting DS9: Twilight.

Oh, no... I see that title and the first thing that pops into my head is the image of sparkly vampires on the Promenade. Damn you, Stephenie Meyer!! You've ruined a perfectly good word! (And what about poor Rod Serling?)

I’ve also been flicking though (again) the FASA TNG Officer’s Manual (hate the games, like the few books i have). It paints a far more colourful (and, frankly, more interesting) version of the TNG universe

I blogged about that book a few months back: Things you didn't know about Star Trek: The Next Generation. For example...

Excerpts from Academy Slang

KOBO (NOUN)
An individual who is undergoing an examination or test without being aware of the nature of the problem. The term is derived from the "Kobayashi Maru."
RIDGE OUT (VERB)
To be consumed by a violent rage and to lose all emotional control. The term refers to the cranial ridge of Imperial Klingons and to the traditional Klingon tendency toward violent temperament.
TANTY (ADJ.)
Emotionally disturbed or insane. The word is a corruption of the name Tantalus.

Dang, that sounds racist. I'm glad that one didn't show up in canon.

 Yeah, I know what you mean. Thankfully, of the two, DRG3 is the highly superior writer. The first chapter of DS9's Twilight, even all by itself, is pretty amazing.

So I just finished Losing the Peace and I am glad I decided to insert it into my reading schedule between Destiny and Over a Torrent Sea, and I just opened the latter and re-read the first two pages.

Jees, it seems like months ago that I bought this Titan book intent on skipping ahead, then read the first two pages and immediately put it down. Now when I read those pages, the significance of the discussion between Capt. Riker and Adm. Masc has a context.

I love how these writers are working together to maintain continuity. Years back, there wasn't as much need, since everyone knew that the TV shows were real Trek and the novels were sort of just for fun. But now that there aren't any TV shows, we have only the books (prequel aside), and it's great how responsible the writers are being on behalf of the other fans. Clearly, they are themselves the biggest and best fans. And it's cool to see the tip of the iceberg of their collaborative processes here at trekbbs.

I will probably put some comments on the thread for grading and reviewing each of the books. Anyhow, onward to Over a Torrent Sea, thence to A Singular Destiny... then Synthesis, then Unworthy then ... hopefully I will be caught up by the time the Typhon Pact books come out.

Is it awful that I liked Twilight? Hey, I was working a really shitty job back then and Corby sucks. I bought the books at the local Asda and....well, it was better than Corby.

I enjoyed Crossover. I thought it was an enjoyable adventure, but it was not without some fairly big flaws:

The scene where everyone claims to be Spock to protect his identity was a really nice idea – but considering the Romulan LOOKED HIS FILE UP ON THE COMPUTER beforehand it simply wasn’t believable that he wouldn’t know what he looked like.

Although at 150 McCoy would have had time to actually go though space academy again and become a command admiral, I in no way believe he is an admiral in anything other than an honorary manner (in the same way I don’t believe Scotty was ever captain of a ship).

Spock’s actions made very little sense. Since when is he such a pacifist? Surely the escape attempt (which was almost-but-not-quite a parallel to the Surak/S’Task kidnapping incident that begat the Romulan Empire in the first place) would have had a far better chance of succeeding with his decades of Starfleet experience behind it. And then at the end when he does act, I’m left thinking “Well, the other half of your movement might STILL BE ALIVE if you decided to try that earlier!”

And of course there’s the final outcome of Spock’s whole Romulan reunification mission, which hung over my head the whole time I was reading. He fails. They all die.

What’s next for Old Spock? We may never know because the nice people in charge won’t release The Hazard of Concealing. How thoughtful of them.

I’m now reading the Voyager novel Battle Lines. I’m enjoying very much – Janeway’s her usual OTT self (which, in small doses is more amusing than infuriating), but gladly there’s very little Chakotay so far. I think the premise, Voyager forcibly drafted into an alien war fleet, is a great one. Hiding the transporters and replicators is clever too. Lots of space battles.

Also: How come the Gold Key versions of Sarek and Zefram Cochrane resemble Ben Cross and James Cromwell rather than their 60’s equivalents? It’s insane!

Actually, we've seen alot of Spock since this book came out, but in all of the ones I've read he's still working towards reunification.

I finished the Myriad Universes entry Brave New World and started on the TNG novel Diplomatic Implausibility by KRAD. Next up is A Stitch in Time.

Very recently finished the following:

Vulcan's Heart
TNG Volume 1 manga
Queen & Country Volume 2
Whiteout Volume 1
Whiteout Volume 2, Melt

About to start Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, Book 2)

For what it's worth, every time I have to write about Twilight at work (like just this week!), I feel like I should turn in my man card...

I'm currently reading Ellery Queen's The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes.

I finished The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing earlier today.

Next up is Star Wars: Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber.

I just bought Inception at Barnes and Noble last night. I know it just came out, but has anyone had time to read it yet?

I finally went back to Prophecy & Change last night. I read the first couple stories a few months back, but I never moved on beyond that until last night.

Right now I'm just reading a small pile of comics, and then it's time to start Christopher's Places of Exile :techman:.

Finally finished Sorrows of Empire and GREATLY enjoyed it!

I'm not taking a brief break from the TrekVerse and have just started The Paris Vendetta by Steve Barry, the latest in the Cotton Malone series of books. A bit of a slow start, but I'm only about 50 pages in so far...

Taking a brief pause from the book on Agatha Christie to read one of her novels, Crooked House. Meant to be one of her best though I've never read anything better than Roger Ackroyd.
