So what are you reading now? Part 2

finished Losing the Peace today. Overall, I found it too depressing, while the story and the writing were good, I had to put down the book every now and then because I couldn't stand the hopelessness anymore.

Setting aside the Cardassian coming-of-age novel now that I got my Christmas presents. I was just going to catch up by reading all the Titan novels, then found I had to ask for the Destiny trilogy for Christmas in between the 4th and 5th Titan book. Well, it only took a chapter for me to realize I needed to read Greater Than the Sum, if only to meet the new characters and see Ezri mature.

So I started Greater Than the Sum last night... and I love the new characters, especially T'Ryssa Chen. She's a breath of fresh air. I see our favorite Captain already has gone into paternal protective mode. This is going to be good. :-)

Ezri isn't in GTTS, actually; her backstory is explained in Destiny, but not shown.

Thanks, Thrawn. That's too bad. It was the backstory that made me want to get GTSS. In any case, I'm glad I did. Una McCormack is a good writer, but the emotions in that book run deep and touch on a lot of very heavy thoughts. I will go back to it when I consume this big story arc that alters the Trek Lit universe.

Reading one of my Christmas presents, Cheers! A History Of Beer In Canada by Nicholas Pashley. It's a quick, breezy read, with some humour, some strong opinions, and some actual information along the way.

But I may put that on hold for a little while to read William Latham's novel Eternity Unbound, which I've had for a few years now. It's an expansion of his 2002 Space: 1999 novel Resurrection, which kicked off the Powys Media line of Space: 1999 novels, adding some prequel chapters and an adaptation of the TV episode to which Resurrection is a sequel. Never seemed like a high priority because I've seen the episode and read Resurrection, but with the news that Powys is back in action and about to release some long overdue books, it seems like time to get around to it.

Really? I found Losing the Peace to be surprisingly optimistic, given the state the Federation is actually in.

I mean, if you want real hopelessness, try Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell!

Uh, I guess I'm missing something because I could not stand Nineteen Eighty-Four when I read it in HS.

... What?!
I think I'm just not philisophical enough for it or something. I don't know why, but it just bored me to death. :scream:

That is the single scariest book I've ever read in my entire life. The idea of the government, watching you, all the time, knowing you could be kidnaped, tortured, and murdered at any moment, and that there was absolutely no one to turn to for help, no infrastructure, even illegal, out there to oppose the government?

How on Earth can that be boring?!

I finished Ghost Walker a couple of weeks ago. It was an alright read, although the whole idea of Ghost-Kirk was a little silly (and yes, I know it’s happened on TV Trek several times). A somewhat sad ending.

Belowdecks crew members are pressurizing sections of the hull and using them for illegal storage of magazines and trinkets. I like that.

Shatner-Kirk’s weird speech patterns are replicated well – all the awkward pauses are present and correct!

I also noticed that it’s got the dreaded Rodenberry/Arnold Stamp of Disapproval on the inside cover. Voyages of Imagination says it’s for the Kirk/Helen story (no serious romance allowed!), with a silly tail about the canonical status of pyjamas in the Star Trek universe. I know Vendetta also has the stamp (and didn’t Peter David enjoy the last laugh in Before Dishonor?), but does anyone know of other novels with it?

I’m now ¾ though Uhura’s Song (quick, someone write a Zoe Saldana nuTrek novel called “Uhura’s Thong”. It’ll sell millions).

This is the most Mary Sue book I have ever read – Evan Wilson shows up, everyone thinks she’s the coolest character ever and she can do everything better than everyone else. She’s also the most heavily-featured character in the book – even title-character Uhura barely gets a look in. They might as well have sent her on this mission by all by herself.

Yeah, I'll agree that those elements of the story were pretty interesting, but I just found the rest of the story just really really slow.

Different strokes and all that jazz possibly?

I've tried to read it a few times, the furthest I've gone is around the middle where the guy and gal (and I can't even remember their names) go into the country side and have sex. (or am I remembering wrong)

Yes it is a very scary book for all the reasons Sci cites above and given the anti terror laws and widened powers that the police posses it is becoming more and more relevant in this "day and age."

While I am here, I might as well say what I have read since last time I posted in here:

Well Trek wise, I've read Unworthy and Synthesis.

Non Trek wise, I've read the first three Rebus novels by Ian Rankin (Knots and Crosses, Hide and Seek and Tooth and Nail) and I am currently reading Strip Jack which is the forth in the series.

I've also been flicking through James May's Toy Stories and Jeremy Clarkson's Driven to Distraction.

I finished Star Trek: Titan: Synthesis by James Swallow. It was really good, the only problem I had was that the Titan crew seem overly paranoid. I then read The Return of Sherlock Holmes: The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is one of the better stories I've read in a while, plus it has a "map" of the crime scene. I'm currently reading Star Trek: Vanguard: Precipice by David Mack. I'm really enjoying this one so far. Next up is another Holmes story, The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter, then on to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Never-Ending Sacrifice by Una McCormack. I'm really looking forward to reading it.

I still don't understand why people keep saying the Titan crew was "overly paranoid". The entire Alpha Quadrant was nearly at the mercy of the Borg, a Borg that was interested in pure destruction and not assimilation. We saw entire worlds DESTROYED by the Borg.

To think that the crew of the Titan or any crew for that matter should not be over paranoid is unrealistic.

Hell, people still refuse to board airplanes or visit skyscrapers because of the events of 9/11 and it's been 8 years since the attacks.

I'm currently in the process of reading as many Star Wars books, set during the Clone Wars, as possible. I finished Dark Rendezvous and Shatter Point and am now working on Jedi Trial. I also just bought The Soul Key, so that's up next.

And there is always my ongoing effort to read all of the DS9 comics and Iron Man: War Machine comics/graphic novels.

I'm so glad to hear you say that about Uhura's Song. I thought I was odd man out on that. Tears of the Singers is a much better Uhura-centric story, IMHO.

You and I seem to be on parallel reading stints. Are you reading the old TOS novels in order? Personally, I'm taking a break to read some of the more recent ones. And I plan in starting the DS9 relaunch soon.
