So what are you reading now? Part 2

Over the past few days, I've finished both the SCE novella Some Assembly Recquired (rating 9/10), and For Want of a Nail (9/10 again), the last story in Shards and Shadows, both of which I really enjoyed.
And I also started Losing the Peace yesterday. I'm only on the first chapter and I've really enjoyed it so far.

Woah, a new thread! Since my last update in the last one, I've finished both Kate Atkinson's Not the End of the World (occasionally frustrating, usually delightful) and Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (which I have a newfound appreciation for-- I shouldn't have trusted the taste of my seventeen-year-old self).

I also managed to stay on top of my exam reading for once, reading all three books for the week:
- Masks by Edward Brathwaite (eh)
- The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts by Maxine Hong Kingston (fantastic)
- Beloved by Toni Morrison (very good)

My current pleasure read is an anthology of original sf edited by George Mann, The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction, Volume Three. I've been reading more and more sf anthologies of late, and I'm glad I have. A wide variety of concepts, ideas, and stories in a short amount of space; it's just good fun, and it allows me to sample a bunch of authors whose longer works I've yet to get around to.

This week's exam reading is selections from The Canterbury Tales, but I read those in the fall, so I'll be skipping it. The other one is Beowulf, which I haven't read since I was sixteen, so I'm giving Seamus Heaney's translation a go and really enjoying it so far.

Here's a question for those who've read the post-Destiny books:

Can they be read in any order, or is A Singular Destiny the jumping off point that the rest build upon?

My apologies if this has already been asked somewhere and I missed it.

They're best read in publication order, even though they chronologically occur in a slightly different one, since through epilogues and other various hints each one tends to refer to the previous ones.

You could read Losing The Peace before the rest if you skipped LTP's epilogue, though. And I think LTP works better there.

I tend to skip around between series. So having recently finished Destiny #1, I took a break for In Enemy Hands (Honor Harrington) and now I'm reading something called Final Orbit about the shuttle program (fictionally) circa '97. I'll probably give in and rebound back to Destiny after this.

Thanks for the info. Out of curiousity, how much would I be missing if I read A Singular Destiny without having read Articles of the Federation?

I'm currently rereading the DS9 post-finale books from Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine forward to prepare for The Soul Key. The Lotus Flower worked much better for me this time. Note to self: don't read books that require thought in the movie theater queue.

Not a lot. Some characters carry over, but they're minor players in ASD. The major character in ASD is wholly original to that book.

I'll be reading Losing the Peace when I get a copy, which I hope will be on my next visit to a bookstore. In the meantime, since reading the Elric book, I've read The Essential Doctor Strange Volume 4 and am now on the second Del Rey collection of Robert E. Howard's original Conan stories, The Bloody Crown of Conan. Lots of late '70s nostalgia there -- that's when I first got into those three fantasy phenomena.

Most recently read Illegal Alien, a 7th Dr PDA with the Cybermen, and been dipping into May On Cars by James May. Not sure what to read next.

After Losing The Peace, I'm starting Julian Comstock, by Robert Charles Wilson. Outstanding so far :)

I finished The Final Solution and, while it was good, I didn't enjoy it as much as Gentlemen of The Road. It's one of those things where you can't pinpoint what you didn't like so much, but you just know how you feel.

The next thing to read is at least the first 100 pages of my last novel for class.

Since I started my break from school, I've been cruising through the DS9 relaunch novels starting with "Cathedral." Last night I finished up the "Worlds" series and later today I'm going to crack open David Mack's "Warpath." Taran'atar is such an awesome character! I tried reading "Rising Son," but I just couldn't get behind the story or the characters. Come to think of it, I don't know if I've ever been incredibly enthusiastic about Perry's stuff… But all the "World" stories were very well done—especially the Cardassia one—and I found myself pleasantly surprised with how interesting the Andorian story was (I expected it to be awful). I also finished "Troublesome Minds" not too long ago, which I recommend to anyone searching for a good TOS/Spock novel. On the non-Trek side of things, I've been taking a look at GW Sebald's work (anyone have any suggestions with where to start?) and the novels of Nahoko Uehashi. Gao Xingjian's "Soul Mountain" and the first Star Wars comics omnibus are still sitting on my shelf mostly unread.

taking a detour from TrekLit to reread the Harry Potter Half-Blood Prince in preparation for the movie viewing. Have Losing the Peace to look forward to afterward - having difficulty pacing myself - I've been waiting to get my hands on LTP for a while!
