I'm just surprised the whole concept of the darksaber didn't involve a quest, or play a bigger role. Fitting that Maul has it.

Yeah, the more I read up on these concepts, it appears crystals having powers has been a part of the lore for a while. Not just Splinter, but also in the ANH novelization. Also, of interesting note, is that in the video game Star Wars Galaxies players had to tune their saber crystals to themselves before using them in sabers.

I don't recall anything like that in the ANH novelization.

I think the idea that it could be used in a lightsaber was something introduced in one of the much later Bantam books.

A "Kaiburr crystal" was a usable lightsaber crystal you could find in KOTOR 2... I found that amusing.

It was apparently a brief reference. I didn't actually read it but a brief history of lightsabers. So, take that for what it's worth.

The novelization, IIRC, does have Ben suggest that lightsabers are still being used in certain galactic quarters. But I don't recall anything at all about crystals.
