So this is why we have red lightsabers

I'm just surprised the whole concept of the darksaber didn't involve a quest, or play a bigger role. Fitting that Maul has it.

I get the feeling they might elaborate a bit more on it's history and/or significance in one of the upcoming episodes (the mid-season finale if I had to guess.)

Yeah, the more I read up on these concepts, it appears crystals having powers has been a part of the lore for a while. Not just Splinter, but also in the ANH novelization. Also, of interesting note, is that in the video game Star Wars Galaxies players had to tune their saber crystals to themselves before using them in sabers.

but also in the ANH novelization.

I don't recall anything like that in the ANH novelization.

I think the idea that it could be used in a lightsaber was something introduced in one of the much later Bantam books.

A "Kaiburr crystal" was a usable lightsaber crystal you could find in KOTOR 2... I found that amusing.

The novelization, IIRC, does have Ben suggest that lightsabers are still being used in certain galactic quarters. But I don't recall anything at all about crystals.

Star Wars Explained did a video on this
