So this is it then?

United was described as Star Trek meets Andor and The West Wing. Both shows had better writing than any Star Trek series ever had, so United could be a good thing for the Star Trek universe. A political thriller sounds interesting and I'm sure there will be space ships and alien worlds. A little depth for Trek would be good. We haven't had that since DS9.

Perhaps there's something to be said for the idea that fictional settings don't always work as containers for any type of show.

A West Wing drama about the internal politics of the Federation feels as tangential as a gritty prestige drama about the criminal underworld in the Wallace and Gromit universe. Which is to say that even if it ends up being good as a standalone thing, it'd probably fare better as an original IP.
Wallace and Gromit as mob enforcers? I am in!

You're almost describing the Expanse.

That would be great, for Star Trek.
Perhaps. But I couldn’t get past the third episode. And I nearly stopped with the second.

Of course, that’s me. Just because I didn’t find it compelling doesn’t mean I think it sucks. Just that I wasn’t interested enough to keep going.

I have my doubts that future Trek will resemble The Expanse in any significant way but if it does, I’ll give it a try—just not with the same enthusiasm I might have for another approach.

I think Star Trek is Star Trek. In the future it might get inspired by The Expanse or Andor or The West Wing or Battlestar Galactica or The Simpsons, it will never be those shows... Star Trek will always be its own thing, when it's done properly that is.

I only watch star trek that appeals to me for intangible and esoteric reasons that cannot be argued against because my emotional truth will be always be true
Sounds good.

Well, that's nice. Luckily for me, no one has to, I can do that for myself.
Yeah, I think most of us have a decent grasp on what makes something more Star Trek or less Star Trek, even if it's just an instinct or feeling sometimes. I wouldn't be able to draw a very good horse from memory but I know what they look like.
