So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest eps

From my understanding, The Best of Both Worlds part 1 & 2 are supposedly one of the best episodes in TNG history, a real fan favorite. Is this correct?

If that is so, I'm afraid I might be selling my TNG DVD's shortly. I struggled through the second season, thinking it was ok at best, but mostly forgettable. But I had also heard that season 3 was the best, or one of the best seasons of TNG, again I struggled to get through the season. So far I thought to myself that this show has, to me, absolutely zero re-watchability. When I came to the last disc of the set & saw The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 I nearly shat myself, I thought to myself "This is going to be AWZUME!!". I was wrong. It was better than most of the other episodes I'd seen previously, but not by a lot. They were not episodes I see myself re-watching either.

This is really a shame, because I like some of the characters, Picard mostly. I also like Worf & Data. The others however, are as dry as Betty White's underwear (stole that from the Shatner roast, sorry) Totally uninteresting. Hell I almost like the annoying little shit over Riker. The only line he's uttered to my delight was the ice cold way he delivered "Fire" from First Contact.

So if I haven't gotten into the show yet, should I give up? It took me 8 months to go through 2 seasons, one of which is supposed to be one of the better ones.

I'd say try to make it through one more season, and if you're still struggling, just give it up.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

It don't get no better than this. Sorry.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I think a better judge of whether you will like the subsequent seasons would be Yesterday's Enterprise or The Defector. If you didn't like those episodes, you probably won't like the series to come.

A friend of a friend of mine who had some, er, emotional issues had a nervous breakdown after the first part because he was so affected by Picard's fate.

What seasons are these episodes on?

Season 3. If you saw BoBW, and you were watching in order, then you saw these already.

See what I mean? I had no idea I had already seen those episodes, I had to look up the synopsis fo those episodes. They were, if my memory serves, above average. I guess that is not a good sign either.

I'd say sell your DVDs. Honestly, if you don't like it, you don't like it.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

If you can't remember watching Yesterday's Enterprise, The Defector and weren't thrilled with The Best of Both Worlds, then it sounds like TNG ain't your Trek. That sucks, cuz I really liked it!

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I love TNG, but I don't think it has aged particularly well. Especially compared to current TV and movies, I can very easily see a newbie not liking TNG. It's very dry.

All third season. If you really can't get in to "The Defector" (which, I think, is Star Trek's best episode), "Yesterday's Enterprise" or "The Best of Both Worlds" then I don't think TNG is the show for you.

Take into consideration that I'm a diehard TOS fan, a show that has aged far more than TNG

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

Yeah, but TOS is at least still kind of exciting. TNG rarely had that going for it.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I say try season 4 too. If not, you're still not liking it, then give up.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I think two of the pertinent questions that haven't been asked are what you look for in a Trek series, and _how_ TNG has failed you thus far.

As an aside, I'm going camping over the weekend so any lack of additional response isn't intentional.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

While Season 3 of TNG is widely considered the best among fans on this board, the approach taken in the next four seasons does not vary too much. I would recommend watching "All Good Things..." if you can. It's not the best episode of the series, but it is a very nice ending for these characters.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

Sorry you did not like these episodes. They are among the best in all of Trek IMO.

A good show with good, interesting characters with great chemistry together mixed with plots that I find myself involved in & dialogue that is entertaining yet intelligent written.

The show has most of these things to some degree, but way too little of it for me to get really involved with the show. Too much is being spent on characters I couldn't care less if they were to die in any given episode.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

Axel...if you don't mind some darkness, or extended plot arcs, it almost sounds like you might want to give Deep Space Nine a shot.

A lot of how I perceive DS9--the deep writing to the characters, the recurring cast you really get the time to know and care about, reminds me of what a lot of people say they like about TOS. The one thing I'd advise you, though, is to get through three seasons before you make a judgment. And that the very best is in seasons 5-7. Obviously it'll be quite a jump, going from a starship to a space station, but I do recommend you at least give it a chance.
