Damn skippy, RAMA! Don't forget the multitudes of people who think it's worth bitching about online. I'm not one of them but this notion that Trek is dead comes from somewhere, doesn't it?

If anyone comes onto a Trek message board in order to decry it's relevance, you better believe Trek is relevant, at least to that person. :D

Wow, at first look $300 seems like a ton of money for that, but when you realize each individual season went for $100 upon first release, that's a great deal...

it is true that trek is not dead, but it has moved to a lower tier. If you look at all the licensees it is obvious. Diamond Select and not Hasbro or Mattell, Bethesda and not EA or Activision, IDW and not DC or Marvel. And the reason that CBS charge so much for DVDs is because the volume is not there like it is with other properties.

Have you been into a toystore lately? look at all the superman, spiderman, and star wars toys...then try and find some trek. Star Trek is now a smaller niche market, skewed older.

Look at how they are approaching the new film, it is an attempt to rebuild a trek customer base. Paramount are rolling the dice based on what trek was...but not what it is.

Let us hope that they can bring it back up to the big time....but for now trek is still the 'mid time'

I forgot all the gloom and doom after Enterprise was cancelled. "Trek won't be back for 20 years" and such nonsense.

Yeah I remember that nonsense. :D People really were underestimating the allure of a big, famous known brand like Star Trek. I knew the corporate bean counters would not stay away long. If Abrams hadn't come along with his idea for them to jump on, it would have happened not long after. If people are willing to resurrect BSG and Get Smart, they'll resurrect Trek.

Um... just because Paramount won't stop whipping doesn't mean the horse is still breathing.

I'd wait until I see Trek XI to render a diagnosis (that's as far as quality is concerned--there's no guarantee people will go and see it. TNG remains the favorite Trek among the general public and look how well it did in its last two outings. Perhaps I should ammend that to I'd wait unitl I see Trek XI's box office--sad but how it works.)

Brand name is one thing. It's like Nike or anything else. Brands don't die very quickly. What goes away is the allure of the brand. If the public gets the impression that a brand doesn't stand for quality, they aren't going to buy it.

I'm seeing the same stuff happen with FF -- right now, it's a liscence to print money. You could probably sell an empty boxed set with the FF logo. But even then, the days of being able to do that are probably numbered. After remaking and releasing old games, and making a bunch of crappy spin offs, the only thing left is nostalgia. People think "I remember when FF was good."

Trek is in the same place at the moment. They know the brand, but mostly they think back to the old days when it was good. Trek XI could change that, or it could seal the deal. It's not dead and beyond resurrection, but most of the good feelings are from past goodness, not the present.

You know, despite your screenname and avatar, it took me forever to realise you were talking about Final Fantasy. I just sat there staring at the abbreviation going, "Fantastic Four? Firefly? Neither of those are 'liscences to print money'..."

:rommie:

Exactly. I certainly hope Trek XI is good but I don't expect it will be; I have a long, involved theory as to why Trek's day is long over and why that's not a tragedy any more than not having an infinitude of anything is a tragedy--maybe I'll post it later tonight.

You make a good point. As long as DVD players are still around (but probably much longer than that), there'll still be 28 seasons and 10 movies of varying Trek goodness (and not-so-goodness, que sera sera). Though many have, I still haven't yet seen all of that material (shock of all shocks, I haven't even seen every TOS episode yet! :alienblush:), and I'm sure there are a few others who haven't seen every episode of every show they can enjoy. Even if you have, there's a lot of rewatchibility in the better ones. And there's the books...anyway, the point is that we don't need this movie to allow us to continue enjoying Trek for a long time to come, so you're absolutely right that it wouldn't be a tragedy if this movie failed. I mean, think of how many people thought Trek wouldn't be seen again for 15-20 years after ENT got cancelled. Half of us had already come to terms with the concept of "no new Trek for a while, if ever." But now, it will be seen, and it just might work; I must say, being a comparatively new Trekkie, I'm excited (this is my first Trek movie experience as a hardcore fan). If it does work, we're going to get something different that will decidedly take some getting used to. But there'll also be the chance to get more of the magic that we all love, and maybe, just maybe, Trek won't be just a geek thing, for a little while. Probably not, but it's fun to dream about, anyway.

Trek died after TOS. Everything after has been an attempt to bring the corpse back to life.

The kids in my son's age group (6-8) are all Star Wars fans. My kid loves Trek just because we have TOS on DVD, but his peers have no idea what it's about. Star Wars kept going. Trek didn't, and the post TOS Trek, IMHO, didn't have the brash, unabashed goofiness and energy of TOS that appeals to kids.

Perhaps the new movie will click and give the old corpse enough jolt to galvinize it for awhile, or we might get a miracle and see it come back to life, but I'm not holding my breath. I wager that it will take itself too seriously.

I donno... *shrug* I showed my niece and nephew TOS when they were around that age. They loved TOS, they are too young to care about FX old or new. Jason ad the Argonauts was BIG hit!. It's all a blur to this generation, I feel. Or fear! Old movies, now available on DVD in every shop, including Star Trek, is being seen by some youth. Retro, I suppose. With the new TOS CBS CGI redo of the FX I'm thinking loads of kids will dig that. In fact, I'm planning that for the niece and nephew come this X-Mass. :)
