So Scotty invented transwarp beaming?

If not, no Trek movie really suffered story-wise from forgetting the previous film's technology.
The point is that no Trek movie has as of now forgotten about important technology, especially not the ones you cited.

As was pointed out by Tuotonic, there are numerous examples in the Trek shows where that tech was forgotten. And yeah, I'm still waiting for that answer about how the E-A and the BoP in Star Trek V were much faster than Voyager.

Nemesis forgot that shuttles had transporters, too, yeah, okay. And that did fuck up the story, because Data died because of a giant plothole.
Yes, and Star Trek VI forgot about Spock's rocket boots, or else Kirk would have more time to save the President.

While we're at it, what are the odds that Red Matter will be forgotten, too? I'd say pretty good, but its absence shouldn't detract from the movie, either.
What do you mean by "forgotten"? The Red Matter that Spock brought with him is fully used up, and nobody but the Vulcans of the 24th century can reproduce it.
You also forget that even the film's writers acknowledge that Starfleet as a whole is more advanced now than their TOS counterparts, too. Scotty has access to a transport formula that he otherwise wouldn't have for decades.

I don't like it when movies of a franchise are inconsistent. Period. You'd probably also find excuses or say "I don't care" when they suddenly bring Vulcan back in the next movie without explanation. But I would be bothered by that.
We're talking about tech, you're now talking about consequence. That in itself is huge. One of the reasons why tech can be forgotten is the personal investment that viewers have -- nobody really cared about Genesis blowing up, everybody cared when Spock died.

And there are no excuses, only precedent and speculation. If you want, you can check out nearly everything I've said on Memory Alpha, including script info and quotations.

And is that a personal dig? I thought we were being civil here. People can disagree with me, that's fine, sure (ie, like me conceding to SilentP a page ago... he's cool), but accusations aren't cool.

wormhole

I've heard wormhole, I've heard Sybok's modifications, I've heard "God's" influence, I've heard warp highways, I've heard a number of theories, but none of that's ever been said on screen. And very few viewers really care, either. Plus, one would have to take into account how the BoP could keep up. It was more important to get the ship to the center of the galaxy than it was to explain how... and every Trekkie-written critical review I've read about the movie never brings up the speed discrepancy as a fault of the story. Rather, fault is found not with the tech but with the story, acting, directing, etc. Completely different concerns.

that would have been hilarious!
You know no one can pull of such a rescue like Shatner can :)

Forgotten "tech" (or other things) in Trek:

Why does anyone have anything but perfect health? After all, the spoors in This Side of Paradise gave everyone perfect health and Kirk discovered how to break their hold on people. So how come there isn't a Federation treatment facility there?

The Guardian of Forever? (I know, Ellison is more powerful than Starfleet)

Warp "speed limits" from a TNG episode? Wasn't Warp 5 the new limit? Wasn't it supposed to fundamentally alter the Federation (akin to returning to dirigibles and steam trains/ships as the fastest mode of transportation on Earth)?

Why does anyone grow old? Didn't they find a way to reverse aging for Pulaski with the transporter?

I'm sure I'm forgetting dozens of examples.

"Reality" or "consistency" between episodes/movies (as opposed to within an episode or a movie) is ALWAYS a secondary consideration. Thus the Sybok Enterprise that's hundreds of times faster than Voyager and the need for antique books to look up Klingon phrases rather than using the computer in Trek VI (even if we accept the rather silly notion of not wanting to use the universal translator to directly communicate).

I find the idea that "they" would "suddenly bring Vulcan back in the next movie without explanation" to be pretty unlikely. I find the part where you say "You'd probably also find excuses or say 'I don't care'" to be unnecessarily personal and unnecessarily accusatory.

You don't like it when movies of a franchise are inconsistent. You're bothered when that happens. Okay, that's fine -- those are opinions you hold. Those opinions do not, however, entitle you to make accusations or insinuations about other people who may be a little more relaxed about perceived inconsistencies than you are. They simply hold different opinions, to which they are just as entitled as you are to yours, and that they express those opinions which differ from yours is not the same thing as "making excuses" for any of those perceived inconsistencies.

This isn't the first time I've seen you accusing someone of "making excuses" for this or that aspect of the movie, when all they've done is formed a different opinion than yours. It reminds me, and not in a good way, about another poster (no longer active at this board) who used to make some even more unpleasant accusations toward those who did not agree with his opinions. Now, I'm not suggesting that you're him; your English and your ability to express yourself clearly are quite a bit better, for one thing, but I am not pleased about the accusatory tone and the insinuations which have been cropping up in your posts. That is not part of civil discussion and it needs to stop.

Most people participate in the discussions here because they enjoy them. It's not a contest or a battle for them, and it shouldn't be for you, either. If someone expresses an opinion which differs from yours, you may explain why you disagree, you may attack the opinion with reasoned discussion, but you should under no circumstances attack the poster who has offered the opinion.

Star Trek V isn't canon anyways, Roddenberry wanted it to be considered apocryphal. Otherwise I'd still be waiting for an explanation for those 78 decks.

He didn't consider the whole movie apocryphal, only certain elements (again, according to www.Memory-Alpha.com ). He wanted elements of TUC to be apocryphal, too, but hey, it got a sequel episode. Regardless, it's Paramount edict that V still counts in the canon.

If Roddenberry had direct control over what was canon and what wasn't, then some of the books would be canon, too. But that's a big and clear no-no in Trekdom.

The one thing never made clear in STV is whether the Great Barrier surrounds the center of the Galaxy, or just that you have to go through it to get there. The argument can be made that Sybok isn't looking for the center of the galaxy, but the planet that they find. Once they find the planet, they stop, and go no farther, whether they have actually reached the center of the galaxy or not.

All it needs is a throwaway line from Scotty about Old Spock grabbing his head and whispering "Forget" after the Narada business was concluded.
