so Roddenberry could talk Miss India into shaving her hair

I had that feeling--30+ years ago. But I got over it.

I think the fact most Trek officers are clean-shaven is more to do with hypothetical 23rd century fashion than regulations. Same deal with the triangular sideburns.

There's also the issue of Vulcan and Romulan hairstyles, whether they HAVE to have the bowl cut or not. Saavik didn't. Romulan Commander didn't. Xon wasn't going to. And yet most of the time when you see them it's just a sea of bowl cuts.

Well when I was younger, I saw the TOS films a lot more than I actually saw TOS. In the series, I used to think he looked strange without a moustache.

I didn't have a beard 10 years ago and now I do. I am unrecognizable.

Also, I didn't have a problem with the TMP moustache, but I had also read the comic tie in when the new uniforms were being adopted, so it wasn't startling.

Also, CGI isn't the answer to everything.

It never occurred to me that some people might not recognize Scotty, but of course some of us had been prepared in advance:

I just watched the first bit if this show on YouTube. Brilliantly bad. The part, 3 minutes in where he (Jason) jumps through the door was one of the best examples of being unintentionally hilarious. Reminds me of Garth Merenghi.

Yeah, well... I was eight years old and I knew it was not great. But it was two years till the next Star Wars came out, we had to watch some kind of space show!

That's true, slim pickings were what we had then. It was hard to get many people to be serious about any kind of space shows, now it's completely different.

And I still think he looks really different even in the Space Academy. I've seen pictures of Shatner and Nimoy with mustaches and it didn't change their appearance as much as with Mr. Doohan, to my eyes anyway.

When I was younger I too thought that they got a different guy to play Scotty in the movies. Doohan does look quite different from his TOS days and it's not just the mustache.

Some people really do look totally different with and without facial hair. Doohan was one of them, Jonathan "Riker" Frakes was another. ;)

Doohan had actually grown out a full beard between shooting TOS and the movies (photographic proof exists of this), but Roddenberry asked him to shave it when they were filming The Motion Picture. His keeping the moustache was, it would seem, a compromise that was reached between actor and producers.

James Doohan, and with him Scotty, of course, seemed to gain weight in his face first, making it fuller and changing its configuration in subtle ways. This is, at least to me, the reason he looked different in TMP when it first came out, much more than the mustache ever could.

Agreed, to my eye the fuller face and softened jawline changed his looks more than the mustache.

I actually think his face, in TMP, looked less full than in TOS (depending on the episode). It's obvious he lost weight to film TMP, and it shows; it aged him. The differences in hairstyle added to the jarring nature. But, I think he actually looks slimmer faced in TMP.

You can see from his jawline, he had probably gotten heavy and lost weight to film the movie and as such gained a bit of jowls. But in TOS he was always a bit full faced.

Add in the fact that the color grading in TMP is much more subdued compared to TOS and it's obvious why he'd look very different.

You can see the added weight in the pictures posted above, both the fan pic with the beard, and the still from Jason of Star Command. Yes, he had to have lost weight, but the fuller face he had from TMP on was partly the aging and jowliness, and partly that he didn't actually lose the weight in his face. Even in the pictures you posted his entire face seems broader and softer, but especially around his jawline.

Thanks for the side by side comparison!

Is it just me, or does he seem slightly more wrinkled in the top pictures than the TMP pictures (especially around the eyes) ? Could they have applied make up to make the aging seem lessened, as actors in movies do, not strange that, but it does seem to impact his appearance more.

Did he adopt a toupe ? He had more of a Cesar haircut in tos. Maybe he chatted to his "good friend " bill for advice?

I found this quote in an earlier thread regarding Doohan's two third season hairstyles: http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/hair-changes-in-the-3rd-season.214720/page-3

Gerrold's The World of Star Trek, first edition, pp. 96-97:

"You know, when I changed my hair, the fans noticed it immediately. I just wasn't happy with it, but I didn't like it combed back either. I thought it looked like hell. But when I went to put it back the old way, Gene didn't like it. He decided I'd have to have a new hairdo, so he sent me to Sebring's. After that it was better, I was able to make it match more easily. It hasn't changed much since then, now it's just a little longer." (As verified by the 1972-73 photo of Doohan in the book.)
