So let's discuss The Good Place

I like this too, but it raises the question for the first humans, where did that god idea come from?

The Decker quote handily answers that -- we create God in our own image. We wonder where the universe came from, and our first impulse is to draw an analogy with what we already know, which is where the things in our lives come from -- either they were born from a parent, like people and animals, or they were crafted by a person, like tools and buildings. A lot of older myths have the universe being born from an egg or from divine parents, but as technology advances, the myths become more about the universe being designed and fashioned by a creator. It's all just projecting ourselves onto the universe.

The cynical answer would be that God was made up by people who wanted to create organized religion as a way of having power over other people...

That comes later. It wouldn't work as a means of wielding power if it didn't already carry meaning for people. What organized religion does is to transform the idea of divinity from something that's about an individual's understanding of the universe and oneself into something that's about an authority demanding reverence and obedience from the masses.

The Good Place was brilliant. I feel it did kinda go on too long. Don't get me wrong I loved the world and the cast, but how many times did they memory wipe people and start again from scratch? Maybe it just seemed like a lot but it did feel the longer it went on that they were more prone to resetting everyone.

Doesn't mean I didn't love the show, just an observation. The first season is an absolute triumph capped off by one of the best twists in TV history and I didn't see it coming.

Had me guessing too and normally that's something I pick up an episode or two before the end of a season. Loved Kristen Bell and how she played Eleanor

I loved the show. The acting, writing, production design, music, etc., were all on point.

For those who want a print version of the show creator's journey with moral philosophy, I recommend the book How to Be Perfect.

It's a good show. More thoughtful and fascinating in how they manage to bring a kind fresh unique look at the afterlife than being funny. The characters are also likable so you are interested in their growth as individuals.

One other thing I forgot to mention before was that as an Arizonan I loked that Eleanor was from Phoenix and some of the show as actually set there.

Hey on the dvd menus there is a blue sofa they are sitting on outside with weird metal thing behind it and I'm sure it has been in the show but where?

I will say that I'm not quite sure any other point in the series lived up to The Big Reveal at the end of S1, though multiple other moments came (very) close.

Did it need to though? I saw the big reveal as the jumping off point to dive into deeper conversations about philosophy and what it means to be a good person, and that's what the show became in Seasons 2-4. Also, while the big twist was nice, I'm glad it kept the same level of humor consistent.

This thread has made me go back and rewatch some Good Place clips and the Jeremy Bearimy scene is one of the more memorable clips of the series for me. Doctor Who has timey whimy, The Good Place has Jeremy Bearimy. Chidi's reaction with "This broke me, I'm...Done" was delivered so well. I also haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember really cracking up during the Trolley Problem episode.

Yes his reaction was perfectly done... And I too loved the episode with the Trolley Problem, that too was perfectly done and so damn funny.

Not at all. I very much liked where the series went from there...my point was just that if the series had one moment that made the most impact, for my money it was that one...and as you indicated, it marked a huge swing in the premise to that point, where it turned out we hadn't been watching what we thought we'd been watching.
