So is that proposed Star Wars series dead?

The live-action one, of course. I don't keep tabs on the franchise a fiftieth as regularly as I do with Trek, largely because I don't dabble in Star Wars' expanded universe practically at all after seeing some synopses I didn't much care for.

So could someone with a closer bond with the Force explain what happened to this project for me? And yes, I'm aware I could do a Wiki search; normally that's what I'd do but I figure there might be some information a guru would hold that would put Wiki to shame.

George Lucas takes a long time in developing his projects. Don't expect this one to be any different.

George Lucas doesn't know how to do anything that isn't CGI heavy. He assumed when he started that CGI costs would come down such that he could do Star Wars on a TV budget. Turns out CGI is still too expensive, and he can't afford to produce the show as written on a TV budget. So until costs come down or Lucas learns how to produce a show with less explosions it's not happening.

On May 8, 2010, at the 30th Anniversary Screening of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back held at the Field Museum in Chicago, IL, Lucas was asked about the current status of the live action show. He stated that production of the show was currently on hold: "The live action TV show is kind of on hold because we have scripts, but we don't know how to do 'em. Because, they literally are Star Wars, only we're going to have to try to do them... a tenth the cost. And, it's a huge challenge... lot bigger than what we thought it was gonna be."

I think Lucas will probably be keeping a close eye on BSG:Blood and Chrome to see what they come up with in the way of cheap virtual sets. But for the next few years I don't expect to see any movement forward on the SW show.

Forget doing cheapass live action, George. Eye candy is what you're best at. Stick with the animated format, make sure you keep listening to the more talented people you are obviously collaborating with now, and maybe figure out how to animate hair and clothes better and make the characters not walk so much like they're marionettes.

One thing The Clone Wars had going for it when it debuted was that it being an animated venture was an effective way to lower expectations. I think this lowering of expectations may have contributed to the success of The Clone Wars.

After the original trilogy, the only likely direction to go was down. Who in their right mind could expect Lucas to outdo himself to the degree that the original trilogy blew many of us away in the 70s and 80s? I believe that the prequel trilogy suffered partly from the audience of the original trilogy having unrealistic expectations.

A live action TV series would likely have the same problem with respect to expectations.
